I realize this is far down the priority list but in due time they should severely fine those stores.
It is awful that people are being preyed on like this.
Everyone that is protecting and aiding our citizens is doing a fantastic job.

For now, I'd suggest contacting the corporate head offices of those companies or the BBB to report anything untoward happening in stores during this emergency.

I wasn't myself a victim of this but I will let the friends that informed me to keep their receipts etc. It's disgusting.

There are some claimed gougings out there that are merely misunderstandings.
People got charged for individual bottles of Dasani at Home Depot because they don't sell cases. They just happened to pick up what was still wrapped as a case.
And Large fruit platters can actually cost $60.

Small fruit platters cost $30 so I can see a bigger one costing $60. I've never understood people buying these expensive platters for that much when you can cut it up yourself for the fraction of the price. Is it just a status symbol to buy cut up fruits?

I think so. It may also be hard for the police to extinguish all these little fires with a full out state of emergency on its hands.

If I am reading this correctly you are saying we need a volunteer group of price checking vigilantes going around and enforcing normal pricing through intimidation and sacks full of door knobs?

Probably best for you that you've been evacuated, then. Once the run on building supplies starts, you'll need to go into hiding anyway.

We'll be holding our prices as best we can, most lumber has been purchased in bulk buys long before this (actually most in January).
The tricky part will be material that we or others run low on and have to re-purchase now, I have a bad feeling our replacement costs may be up from the suppliers (but this scenario happens every year regardless of situations like the one we are currently in, you try to buy your summer supply with the special deals in January/February).
I am seriously reconsidering what material to use in my basement development now, thinking doing a polished concrete will save us a bit of headache should our basement flood like this again. One less thing to replace.

Any chance they can restore gas to the calgary tower to light the flame?
It would be a powerful symbol right now.

How many sheets of drywall do you think I can hoard in the back of my minivan?
EDIT: On a more serious note, I don't want to imply that you will be gouging consumers, good on you if you are able to hold prices. I am sure the whole construction industry will be mayhem for a while.

Yeah things are going to be hectic for sure, but it will be business as usual for us and we will keep pumping out product to our customers to help in the recovery.
Our little Canmore store has stayed open and helped out where they can too.

Can't do that if you're price gouged on the doorknobs
Nenshi just stated that there has been extremely limited and isolated cases of gouging. He didn't say how to approach it, but that it was illegal and isolated.

i gotta say, Nenshi and his team have been fantastic the last few days. If you don't think the guy is a good mayor after this, I have no problem calling you an idiot.
Rutherford would've probably just yelled at the river.

Will the military that was shipped from Edmonton be used to set up patrolled perimeters?
Relying on just the police doesn't seem reasonable if people start returning in droves and have to be turned back.

This kind of exposure for Nenshi as a fantastic leader for of all Canada has me wondering if he would consider running for Premier of AB after another term of Mayor. Then maybe after that PM?
Premature of course just wondering out loud. What a fantastic leader for our city he's been.
