The transformers downtown have water in the oil, and they would explode if energized. They need to drain the oil and replace it before they can start them up again.

Man that would be illegal as hell here... After the tornado Sams club marked up the flats of bottled water to 10 bucks and a ####storm ensued. I think Oklahoma ( maybe all of America) has a price gouging law. After the Katrina Hurricane , a couple gas stations had 8 bucks a gallon for gas and fines were laid heavily on them.

It is probably the right price like others have said. I used to work for a catering company and that price is similar to what we had.

I am glad we are able to talk about price gauging as being one of the major current topics. It means that this situation is crappy but not a straight up catastrophe

The other thing they mentioned, the power outage in the communities of Douglasdale, Douglasglen, Mckenzie Lake, and Mountain Park is related to the substation beside Deerfoot. The cable across the river washed away and Enmax is working on repairing it. Everyone on the other side of Deerfoot in McKenzie Towne are running off generator, I guess at the new hospital. They said the power would be on sooner than everywhere else.

The transformers have a possibility of water in the oil. They will not know until the stations are dried out and examine then. If there is water they will drain the oil and replace. If no water then there is no need to replace the oil.

I'm hearing military choppers outside. Can anyone confirm? Trees are in the way.

I work for a construction equipment rental company and I have lots of customers on job sites downtown. Speaking with them about what they have been told today I would say that they will not even be able to begin pumping water downtown until Tuesday at the earliest.

We are bringing in pumping equipment from Eastern Canada and the USA to help with the clean up but until the river has receded significantly and the city has a proper way to drain the water and deal with the contamination. Some of these job sites have large equipment, debris and even fuel storage tanks that are completely under water. I would say downtown will be crippled until at least Wednesday-Thursday.

Since im not up on Floods do they know when it will crest and start going down or is it just a hope it goes down soon?
Can they predict this stuff or is it just something that happens ( kind of like Tornados)... ya know hey it's been raining a lot it might happen so be prepared or can they say it will be heavy flooding during these 2 weeks, pack up and get out?

Wow -- I wonder how long that will take. Even if they can get the roads clear and the c-train back up and running, I guess it's a moot point if they can't get the power back on in the core.

The problem was caused by a massive storm that dumped nearly 2 inches of rain in Calgary, and up to 7 inches up stream all in one day. Just a stupidly large amount of a water in such a short amount of time basically screwed everyone. There was no time to prepare, as it wasn't even on the radar in the morning yesterday. Not much you can do when you get nearly a year's worth of precipitation in 24 hrs.

Yes there is a science to predictions. There will be monitoring stations located throughout the entire basins that will send data. This data will allow for accurate predictions for flow averages, peaks and any expected pulses.

Hmmm mid week? It wouldn't shock me if my employer attempted to snag the computers from the office and drop them off at our homes in the meantime.
