One of you tech savvy people needs to get the guy they interviewed on Global up on here. Old fellow evacuated to COP/ Winsport?
Anyway he says they had no beds, then he says "I slept on the floor, ha ha ha ha ha"
It's the laugh that was awesome.

Public cleanups are a fantastic way to socialize and expand community relations. With Calgary's communal spirit around Stampede, the aftermath of this could be a great moment of civic pride.

No water, but I got the last 6 pack of lemon San Pellegrino at my grocery store. Small victories.

I just heard from a buddy in Med Hat. They are going to get smashed, supposed to be more than the 1995 flood.

The Safeway in Mardaloop was completely out of water, and soon to be other bottled drinks. Bread was all gone, and soon milk. I noticed that meat was nearing empty. I waited an hour in line. Everyone was extremely patient within the store. Parking was a gong show.

Just got home from the gas station, Canadian Tire in Shawnessy and Co-Op in Oakridge. The check-out line at the Co-Op store was looping around the entire interior store perimeter. Two people were regulating people to cashiers. Took me approximately 30 minutes to check-out. No bulk drinking water at the store (and other stores they said on the radio). At the gas station, there were three vehicles waiting for each pump. This is how panic starts. It's not as if we are going to be cut-off from the rest of the world...

I wonder if the #1 being washed out, as well as the rail line, is going to affect our supplies. Just to be safe, I bought a 2-4 of water and more importantly, a 2-4 of beer.

We've lost most of our western link. The water isn't going to stop once it passes through Calgary, and could very well screw up eastern road/rail links.
We wouldn't be completely cut off, but there is substantial risk of delays in transport into the city, never-mind the logistics of delivering to neighbourhoods that are cut off right now.
People are often not even stocked enough to survive 2 days, let alone potentially a few more being cut off from supply access.

Just in case someone asks again - from Banff National Park's FB page:
Quote:
The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy #1) is now open in both directions between Golden and Banff to private passenger vehicles and tour buses ONLY.
No commercial vehicles (semi, 18-wheelers, transport trucks) except those making deliveries to the communities of Field, Lake Louise, Banff and commercial accommodations (hotels, hostels, bed & breakfasts, restaurants, etc) are allowed at this time.
*** IMPORTANT - The Trans-Canada Highway eastbound from Banff remains closed until further notice.

Crazy. I went to safeway and Petro along 90th Ave this morning. Really glad I went then. The safeway was very busy, but lots of items left. No one at the gas station either. It's probably a very different scene now.

I know there's a lot of people that are bringing them food and coffee right now, but I think that in the weeks and months following the flood and cleanup, we should all go out of our way to thank the police, firefighters, military, paramedics, EMTs, etc. If you see one in line at the local coffee shop or convenience store, pick up their tab. It's the least any of us can do.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

From the city. Looking like this could be worst flooding ever there.
Quote:
Medicine Hat – The Emergency Operations Centre has been activated as the City of Medicine Hat prepares for record flood levels. Alberta Environment has advised of this morning that the expected flow of the South Saskatchewan River will reach 6,000 cubic meters per second by 6 p.m. Saturday June 22, 2013. This is 600 c/m/s higher than 1995.
Protection of life and the safety of residents is the number one priority. A Local State of Emergency will be declared as of 1 p.m. today.
There will be flooding in low lying areas, road closures will occur and a strong possibility exists for water flowing over some bridges. Details of affected areas will be provided as soon as possible.
Sandbags and tiger dams are currently being strategically located by city crews who are preparing for this event and focusing on protecting critical infrastructure.

Looks like Lethbridge is the only major town in Alberta whose downtown doesn't lie right on the river. Lucky to be here.

He was saying that the flow is projected to be 8000 cubic metres, I think he said that in 1995 it was 5000 cubic metres. My understanding is 1995 was the worst Med Hat has had in a looong time.
