Insurance does not cover flooding, only sewer backups.
Earlier on CTV news they said that the 05 flood incurred 250 mil of insured damage. Flood coverage exists, but it is not standard. I imagine there is nothing standard about the Stampede grounds' insurance coverage and would be shocked if they weren't insured against flood damage.
Barrier Lake Dam, on your right hand side as you drive out to Nakiska.

FYI, hearing this from a friend who's spouse is a cop. They are going to be forced to release more water from the dam so it's going to get worse before it gets better. If you're in an evac zone, please don't take it lightly.
I'm in utter disbelief over this. Feel so helpless here in the UK. Fortunately my parents and siblings and their families are safe and dry. I hope everyone else's are as well.
That barrier lake dam picture I think puts this really into context. We were there last week, and if you have ever seen a normal picture of the water, that is one insane picture.
Granted, they probably opened the dam for the flood, but still wow.
Here is a random question, if the dam is lets say 15% open on a normal day, water levels rise, keep rising, would they warn the city of Calgary prior to opening it up compeltly? Wouldn't that create a singular huge wave with no warning for those downstreame of the Kanasikis river?
I think they're all above their controller limits, so the spillways are just taking the excess, but should be fine structually.
The last one that might impact us is if the Bearspaw dam (Bow) has to increase their flow, we'll get a final spike in volumes thru the city.
^Dams can only control up to their top (duh), anything above that goes over the spillway. They'll be in constant communication with authorities on their levels and when the top will be reached. They'll also notify as volumes are increased prior to hitting the max capacity. (ie if they open from 50% to 100% in hopes of lowering resevoir levels ahead of a surge)

Yikes. Stay dry fellow CPers. Not a good day for a swim. Fortunately I'm safe up in Edmonton, but it appears Medicine Hat is about to get it as well. Luckily my parents are on high ground, but I have a ton of friends and family in low areas near the river.
