I've read some vague speculation that Colorado really likes Barkov since the combine. A couple of weeks ago I said that it's even possible that they trade down a couple of spots to get a forward. Didn't really think it's likely, but I think people sometimes become too fixed on certain players being the "obvious" choices just by reading many draft guides that all echo each other.

Colorado is going to draft Drouin. They could probably trade down at least a spot and still do it but Roy loves the spotlight and might want to go 1st for that reason alone.

Also he has a man-crush on French players and the organizational need there is probably not down the middle.

I don't sense any teams trading up to take Jones. I do think it's possible COL trades down to take Jones. That should tell you something.

McKenzie weighs in: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=425894

Quote:
Why would Joe Sakic say that if the Colorado Avalanche keep the first overall pick in the NHL Draft, they are leaning towards passing on defenceman Seth Jones?

Bob McKenzie: There are two schools of thought out there on Sakic's comments. No. 1 is maybe it's a sincere and honest declaration in that quite frankly, they don't have the Denver kid who grew up there who has a high profile name because he's Popeye Jones' son. They don't have him ahead of any of the forwards that are available and therefore they want to start cushioning the blow and don't want it to be a big backlash if, all of a sudden, they surprise everybody on draft day by taking Nathan MacKinnon or Jonathan Drouin. The flip side is, there's some people out there who thinks it's posturing; that Sakic is merely saying this because he believes the Florida Panthers or the Tampa Bay Lightning really want MacKinnon or Drouin. And if they think that those players are going to be gone to Denver with the number one pick, they might offer something. I don't believe that. I think the Panthers are going to sit there and say 'we're content to sit in the number two slot and take whoever's there according to our rankings.'

My guess is he just wouldn't really want to play in the state of Florida.

That would cost them Duchene or Landeskkog

I'd move Landeskkog for #2 in a heart beat.

I would and I wouldnt even go McKinnon - Drouin. I would probably get Jones instead of Drouin and smile for years.

Has a team ever picked 1-2 in the same draft?

Why would the Avs trade their 20 year old captain? Makes no sense whatsoever.

So they can draft an 18 year old who may develop into a player as good as Landeskog. Don't you know anything? The hype and infinite potential of a young kid who hasn't taken a shift against players over the age of 20 clearly trumps the proven commodity of a young player who has assumed the captaincy of an NHL team!

For the same reason that back in 2000, the New York Islanders traded their 21-year-old stud goalie and drafted an 18-year-old stud goalie.

However, AFAIK the GM of the Avalanche is not Mike Milbury in a clever disguise, which kind of spoils that explanation.

Landeskkog is a above average first line forward. I don't think his ceiling is as high as any of the top 3 in this draft. Landeskkog had an impressive rookie season but lets not get carried away. He has 69pts in 118 games. That is good first line production but nothing amazing, even as a 20 year old. Mac, jones and drouin are all more attractive assets and skill sets IMO.

That's my take and why that deal is easy to make for me. Totally understand how others wouldn't though.
