Not with a 12,000-seat hockey arena, it couldn't.

And the 'richest ownership group in the NHL' wouldn't be very rich anymore if they shelled out an extra billion dollars to build a CFL stadium. To put it in perspective, a billion dollars is roughly seven years' total revenue (not profit) for the entire CFL (not the Stampeders).

Who said it has to be a 12,000 seat stadium? I'm talking about a dual-use facility concept.

I would do anything for a billion dollars . . . but I won't do that.

$1.5B is the total investment for the whole complex which includes the football stadium, arena, shopping/entertainment center, office buildings, apartment buildings, a 5-star hotel and a 1,600 stall parking garage.

The thing is, that 'dual-use facility' in Moscow is a billion-dollar soccer stadium with a hockey rink and some other extras added in. The utility of a billion-dollar football stadium (for any definition of football) in Calgary is approximately zilch.

Basically, you'd be expecting the tail to pay for the dog.

A dual attached facility would be interesting, but also risky IMO. Attaching the two complexes, makes renovating, upgrading or even the next generation facility that needs to be constructed (I know decades away) potentially tougher to do. Not saying it isn't possible, but it does tie the two facilities together on some level, and then potentially the pace of change.

I'm not sure you'd want the two completely attached, as there's a good chance IMO in Calgary you are far more likely to be upgrading and adding more dollars into the NHL rink that you would be the CFL stadium. Again, attaching them doesn't mean that is impossible, but if it's one facility it could drive up the maintenance costs on a CFL facility that simply won't warrent it due to the market.

I feel the Bow trail location would be a traffic disaster for 90% of people, and is not an improvement over the current situation, in terms of Night life or Transit. So I would be a little disappointed if that's the location.

I'm hoping for the South End of the East village, or the North End of Victoria Park. With a Train station incorporated into the build that could be the start of a S.E. line. That would have to be a joint effort between the city and the Flames, so it seems unlikely if they are planning on doing something before the election.

I think Fire park is the second best choice. I has to be one of the most accessible locations in the entire city by road. The transit situation would be the same as Bow Trail or the Saddledome. Its closer to the airport for out of town visitors, and I think any area the arena might go will need growth in terms of night life. But its not like Sunalta and the East Village are busting at the seams with sports bars and restaurants right now.

I agree that Bow trail would be less ideal for car based traffic than the east side of the belt line. But not that much worse and the new train line is already in place. Don't understand your entertainment comment though, that location is just as close, if not closer to 17th ave based bars and restaurants than the current dome location is. Obviously it's not as close to the two casions or a handful of smaller pubs or lounges that exist because of proximity to the Dome, but those things will start to spring up around the new rink wherever it may be.

I hate the idea of the Fire park. Don't understand why it's important to be close the airport, no one is flying in and out for games, at least not in any sort of volume worth thinking about. And it's the worst for entertainment by far. You can't get to the DT or beltline scene with out taking a 4 train stop plus walk. Yes some stuff will pop up around the rink there, but I want the pop up options and quick access to the Beltline and DT bars post game, so I'm fine with either East or West side of DT.

I'd be shocked, absolutely shocked, if the area was west of downtown along bow trail.

Traffic would be a nightmare!

I'd love it if a site like this or the Firepark one was chosen.

According to a post on SSP by someone's father in association with owners, the new arena will be located where the GMC dealer lot is in the west village.

That GMC Dealership area is perfect. It looks like the transit stop there was made with a new arena in mind. It could fit right in just like Vancouver's sky train goes right to their arena.

Since it's rumored Flames owner might make a new football stadium along side of it, I wonder if the Greyhound site will be included, or will the complex be all to the west of it? Figure that Bow Trail westbound is going to be realigned here.

Also posted added more information:

More arena news: (don't get too excited) the owners are trying to get the city to pay ~half of the near $1 billion price tag. Thus, it's probably a few years off.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...43#post6183743

If the total of the project itself is indeed that price, then obviously it's not just the arena itself getting built. Really interested to see what's in store.
