It is a sight to behold. When water is pushing over the spillway, it is like thunder! I checked it out during the last major flood (2005?), and you could feel the ground shaking.
This is what they expect to happen again:

I believe it was the guy from the water emergency centre (or whatever the group who is dealing with this is called) who stated it to media.
Also what others said above about 2005

When i drove by the Reservoir the other day it looked pretty empty and low.

Our river (Lethbridge) will peak around 5 this afternoon... they're saying 1995 levels of flooding. Schools are closing early, and I don't think Lethbridge has closed schools due to weather in the 11 years I've been here.

Not physically possible. How does the water back up, and not flow over the spillway?
In normal operation that spillway is dry, and and the water is dropped through the turbines. Once the spillway gates are opened, there is no way for the water to rise above the level of the spillway.
And as Jimmy states below, you no longer control the rates in the Elbow below the dam, and multi-million dollar homes start getting soggy.

There is a bridge on top of the dam, so in the photo posted by Flacker, water is coming over the dam and under the bridge.
Either way, that's the point where there is no longer control of the water levels on the Elbow.

Normal operations there is no water on the spillway at all. The threat is that you no longer have rate control and flooding will occur.

Mandatory evacuations of 25 homes here so far, and they'll probably have to close our 2 bridges which kinda cripples our city since the river bisects it.

From CBC: Calgary should brace for flooding worse than 2005, city warns
Quote:
Officials in Calgary are warning residents to brace for flooding worse than what the city saw in 2005.
The city held a press conference Thursday after declaring a state of emergency in anticipation of heavy flows from the Elbow and Bow rivers reaching the city.
"The data we have currently would indicate that we will probably see water come over the top of the Glenmore Dam, at a flow rate that probably exceeds that of 2005," said Bruce Burrell, director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

Damn that is not good news.
Here's the overflow in 2005:

Anyone know when this is supposed to peak? I heard noon, but I just got off the phone with my old man who was standing beside the sheep in okotoks and said it was still coming up.
From his perspective his house isn't underwater yet (he lives on the river) so it's still not as bad as 2005....

Most people on Riverside have been evacuated onto Buses. That is where my grandparents were found.

I know people that live in high river, and it looked like their area, but it's not. They live up in the NW corner, where long view tr. hits HR.
