I think its important to realize that a lot of these deals were terrible contracts, but it takes hindsight.

I think the majority of these 'mega-deals' will be considered absolutely insane in a few years.

I think even Webers and AOs contracts might be viewed as terrible in due time

I can see Briere in Pittsburg next year. A great playoff performer and he can stick it to the state rivals Philly. Plus it's close in proximity to where he wants to live.

I like the idea, but I just don't think they can fit another 2+mil salary without shedding an important piece.

This is why I despised all those stupid long term contracts that were being doled out. Absolutely killed the trade market and screwed so many teams over and the players when they could not live up to the value of those contracts. I wish the league would have kept their foot down on the shorter term contracts they wanted.

Bryz: Horrible
Richards: Horrible (never mind 'bullet dodged', this was potentially Cuban Missile Crisis averted for the Flames)
Parise: Probably not great towards the end.
Suter: You get Norris calibre play out of him for the next six or seven years, it'll be worth it. Hope he retires soon after.

Sounds like Briere will stay out east:

Now, the only question left is where Briere will land. Ottawa, across the river from his hometown of Gatineau, Quebec, seems like a natural fit. However, Senators GM Bryan Murray isn’t usually keen on smaller players but may take a flier if “the price is right.”
Montreal and New Jersey are also possibly landing spots. Briere would like to remain close to his three hockey-playing boys - Cameron, Carson and Caelan - who will stay in South Jersey.

Not that there is any chance of him coming here anyway, but I don't think he will be that much of a hot commodity. 35 yrs old and he is a few years past a ppg player (in the regular season). I could see a short term deal with NJ as his best bet.

Philly must not expect to make the playoffs the next couple seasons, considering Briere is one of the best playoff performers in the league.

i know we're all hoping for some interesting cap buyout options to be available to the flames, but i think all will be happy taking the cash, and then picking and choosing contending teams, and not have a huge salary request, given they are being paid at least some money already.
I hope whatever teams lose in the briere sweepstakes have cammalleri as their targetted backup plan.

I thought the buyout period couldn't start until 48h after the final game of the Stanley Cup?

While true, he just wasnt worth his $6.5M cap hit. They'd have a better chance of making the playoffs if they could pay that out to players who can still deliver.

15 teams or more believed to have interest in Briere once he becomes a buyout UFA. Briere will want a 1-2 year deal. #TSN
