"Flying is the worst one because people come back from flights and they tell you their story and it's like a horror story. It's, they act like their flight was like a cattle car in the 40's in Germany. (yeah) That's how bad they make it sound (right). They're like it was the worst day of my life. First of all we didn't board for 20 minutes (right) and then we get on the plane and they made us sit there on the runway for 40 minutes. We had to sit there. Oh really, what happened next? Did you fly through the air incredibly like a bird? Did you partake in the miracle of human flight, you non-contributing zero? Wow, you're flying! It's amazing! Everybody on every plane should just constantly be going, oh my God, wow (yes) you're flying, you're, you're sitting in a chair in the sky (yes, yeah, yeah) but it doesn't go back a lot. And it smells really. You know, here's the thing. People like they say there's delays on flights (yeah) delays really New York to California in 5 hours. That used to take 30 years to do that and a bunch of you would die on the way there and have a baby. You'd be with a whole different group of people by the time you got there. Now you watch a movie you take a dump and you're home. "

Does Swissair still exist? For some reason I thought it went out of business after the crash off Nova Scotia. I could be completely wrong!
I'm a casual traveller, rarely ever travel for business. Westjet continually has received my business over the years for domestic travel, but I'll admit I'm getting a bit weary of the cash-grabbing and decline in service over the last few years. I'm willing to look closer at flying AC now more than ever.
I do think (and people can feel free to disagree with me) is WestJet still has better on-ground service. I can't think of a time when I've waited in line more than 10 minutes to drop my bags/check in. The two times I flew AC last year (one domestic, one international), the wait was no less than 45 minutes in line, juggling a baby and all the gear. I waited in line patiently and watched as there was a customer service rep who only dealt with first class/elite staus folks - in which there were about four in the 45 minutes I stood there. The rest of the time she twiddled her thumbs. Meanwhile, folks were in danger of missing flights and were getting bumped up to the front of the line, then pushing the rest of us even later. That is the one thing that makes me very hesitant to fly AC, just the rigormorale of checking bags, especially now that we have a toddler.
No, try again. There was no AC rep "twiddling their thumbs" in the baggage drop line because they were waiting for elites, because exec class and status passengers use a totally separate line.
I love how it's always AC's fault that people have to stand in line with their kids and baggage. But obviously, Westjet cares about families, so I would encourage you to keep flying them. Leave AC to us elite types.

I flew on WestJet this week and it was punctual, my bag arrived with me, and there was no snark from the customer service folk. I even got to see the Leafs finish their debacle live in mid-flight. All of the screens that I could see appeared to be working, everyone got offered a drink and a small snack, and it was generally a regular and uneventful flight with no noticeable hardships endured by anyone.
Just balancing out the anecdotal "worst flight ever" stories with how the vast majority of flights go on either airline: You hop on a plane in one city, you sit there for a bit, and you hop off in another city.
It's not like people are proposing revolts in the streets or for airline management to be pitted against bears in unarmed combat, they're saying "I don't like A because I get this thing I want on B for the same price".
Then I'd like to be first to propose the bears thing. If westjet had management in a cage match with a bear at the front of a plane every flight, they'd definitely become my airline of choice. Plus, think of the pay per view. Ancilliary revenue for the win!

My father just flew with WS to Maui (he usually prefers the AC non-stop flights in the winter season).
He did receive an email the day before informing him that the aircraft operating YVR-OGG would not have any seatback entertainment. So he was able to plan accordingly, and apparently they did have tablets that you could rent for $10 on the flight.

"WestJet is proud to introduce its newest in-flight entertainment, the Bear and the Maiden fair!"

My flight back from Oahu last January had no seatback entertainment (new plane). The tablets were passed out to passengers with the comment that Westjet was planing to go to the tablets in the future and wanted opinions from the passengers. IIRC there were 5 downloaded movies on it as well as some tv shows and documentaries. I hope WestJet follows through on their promise as it was definately better than their crappy seatback TV's.
They did follow through. No television, less leg room, worse OTP and tablets for rent. But, heh, they also announced record profits in the first quarter. Shareholders are happy. Go figure.

Yes, separate lines, but could be the same set of counters depending on the airport. So he may not be entirely wrong.
I have a question about these tablets they're introducing. I found this picture and I assume this is what we're talking about...
That answers part of my question, which was, do you have to hold the tablet for the the duration of the flight. At least it appears that it can clip onto your tray table.
Is there some way to use it with the tray table up? As a fat guy with long legs, I find the tray uncomfortable to have down for the whole flight (especially if the person in front reclines at all). So, it's nice to have the screen mounted in the seat in front of you. It would be nice if the tablets had some way of being attached to the seat in front of you in the same way.

Nowhere else for this, but is this WJ commercial voiced over by Andy Garcia? Likely not, but seems awfully close to the "Terry Benedict" Garcia voice from Ocean's Eleven.
Air Canada all the way here. For those who have to fly on Westjet (I do sometimes but reluctantly) you can use your American Airlines One World reward card to collect miles.
Probably my crappiest experience on a west jet flight coming back from Vegas. Half hour delay leaving Vegas then we get to Calgary and the gate wasn't working they found that out after being hooked up for 15 minutes then they had to push back and go to another gate so that was an extra 15-20 minutes so almost an hour of delays.

An hour delay? Thoughts and prayers.

I just flew ANA - I can say that they had more room than Westjet seats. That's right folks, a Japanese domestic airline has more room than Westjet.
Which inter japanese flight was that and on what model of aircraft?
I'm not sure I would call ANA a "Japanese domestic airline"

WestJet is just pissing me off lately because they keep spamming the hell out of my email, particularly when I never signed up for their crap to begin with. I've 'unsubscribed' and thought I blocked this poop but it's still getting through. Fack off.
Not sure if mentioned previously, having read about 80% of the thread thus far. Anyone else getting spam calls to their cellphones?
I am getting calls 2x a week from what I believe is real people's numbers "Angela Rodriquez" etc. When I answer, it is a recorded message saying I've won something from WestJet and to stay on the line.....

I've been getting the same thing recently. Always "real" phone numbers with the same prefix as my cell number. The one time I picked up it was from expedia.ca telling me I won a....... *click*
Not sure if this should go here, but I'm flying for the first time in my life with US Airways in August from Toronto to Munich with a stop in Philadelphia each way. Does anyone have any experience with them?
