Default Homeowner's Insurance - Water Intrusion

With last night's storm we now have water coming out of our main floor ceiling (nothing upstairs or in the basement). Is this an issue for a homeowners insurance claim or do I get to deal with it on my own?

If anyone has any experience or (quality) advice in these kinds of situations I'd be grateful for any tips.

Unless a hole is created by wind or hail it won't be covered under your home insurance.

Do you know where the water is coming from?

Came to find thread discussing water issues arising from last night. Left satisfied. Hoping to see some good advice in this thread!

This is key.

You need to identify where the water is coming from, that will help determine if your insurance company will respond.

As FKA said, really the only coverage is sewer backup. If it came in through the foundation or window or something I recommend pooping in the water and calling it sewer backup. Just kidding thats fraud . . .

I think all that's left is for you to tell her it's not covered then she might feel a little better about it being covered

Why don't you go back to being offended about obese people.

Can anyone confirm if there was a massive 'wipers on high can barely keep up' dump in the Kensington/downtown area at about 7-8am today? Just trying to gauge when the rain got in and started warping floors....

Why not phone your insurance company and ask? We all know from the past insurance threads that CP poster's advice isn't always correct.

Because that takes up the time of the company dealing with claims from last night...

Read your policy under exclusions it will tell you all you need to know.

Plus how much is the damage? What is your deductible, how much will your rate increase? If it is nothing major is it worth a claim?

Nothing like a thunderstorm downpour, but we had a heavy steady rainfall from about 3/4am until about 9am in West Hillhurst.

House sprung a leak in main floor roof as well and north facing window. Tarped our little bedroom patio and think that may have stopped it.

After a storm last year we had noticed a tiny damp spot above our kitchen table and then this morning there was water tracks across the ceiling and maybe a gallon of water on my counters and floor where it had dripped out of a light fixture.

The thing in common with both storms is that they featured a lot of driving rain coming from the east rather than the N or W. I suspect it is an envelope issue (Cedarglen home, 2007) and have called a home inspector I dealt with once a decade ago to come take a look next week.

the joys of home ownership ;-)

Bleh - that's the same thing I suspect I'm having issues with. The front of my house is East facing and I suspect the driving rain from the east overwhelmed either some flashing or window units and leaked water into a bay window cantilever. Also come out via a potlight.

Time for a little ladder work I'm afraid and channel my inner Mike Holmes.

I am not sure if anyone has touched on this.
Flood is considered water leakage and seapage. This is not covered by any insurance company in any way shape or form. Now if the city rates it as a catastrophe, just like Canmore is right now, then the Government may step in and act just like the insurance company.
You would have to call the insurance company you are with, file a claim, then wait for the insurance company to deny coverage and you would take that letter to the government and they would step in and help.
Now if the government states that the damage is NOT severe enough....Calgary as of right now, then no coverage and you are on your own.

Same thing with my house. It leaks when there is driving rain from the East. My house is about 13 years old thou

Hit the nail right on the head. This is all you need to know.

Only other thing worth mentioning, flood damage IS covered under car insurance for anyone who's vehicle was swept downstream.

Sounds like I might go for a drive; I hear the forecast is calling for thunderstorms with high probability of Jewish lightning.

This is correct, though I suspect now that the government will step in. I am on standby to come there to help with the expected claims.
