Nope nope, I want to redo mine now..
Here's something like your 13/14 Calgary Flames:

Glencross - Weiss/Bozak - Horton
Baertschi - Backlund - Nichuskin
Stempniak - Knight - Horak
Bouma - Stajan - McGrattan
Jackman

Giordano - Wideman
Butler - Brodie
Wotherspoon - Breen
Smith

-Sarich, Cammalleri dealt for picks, Tanguay.. not as likely, but hopefully also dealt.
-One of Bozak/Weiss lured in by big money contract to play top C minutes.
-Same deal with Horton. Allows Nichuskin to develop on second line.
-Wotherspoon and Breen start to make their way up defense ranks.
-Bouma gets 4th line spot as was supposed to be given last season before injury.

Or...

Gio - Wideman
Cundari - Brodie
Doug Murray - Breen
Butler/Smith/Wotherspoon

Not great, but okay.

Doug Murray eh? A good 3rd pairing choice.

Yeah I wasn't too familiar with this year's ufas on defense, so I just gave some promotions to the farm kids. Cundari is equally as likely a candidate as Breen/Wotherspoon though, I'd agree (maybe not second pairing). He looked good in the couple games he got.

Doug Murrary and Breen, that would be a large third pairing. How is Breen's skating?

Does it matter? Murray and Breen could join hands and block the entire blue line.

He'd actually get $25,000 more per season if he waited until free agency. By signing now, he's limited to the rookie max for 2009 draft picks ($900,000), where if he signed as a UFA, he'd be able to get the 2013 rookie max ($925,000).

i just don't fully believe the flames will go scorched earth.

I think they are freeing up money to actually use it. Thru trades, thru free agency, thru buyout free agents, i think they will target getting some top 6 forwards, and another top4 d.

Breen skates well enough. Fairly mobile for such a big body.

Exactly how much more money do they need to free up? We've got tons. And with Kipper retiring, even more.

No, I think they're finally realizing just how much dead weight we actually have now with an official rebuild happening.

I just had a crazy mental image of those two playing Red Rover on the Flames blueline.

With free agency and trades yet to be determined, I would still say that this team cannot afford to trade Matt Stajan. At the moment, he's the best natural center in the organization.

Breen's skating is fine. Never going to be confused with Bouw, but he's very fluid, and his stride is good. Positionally he looks to have an excellent feel for where he has to be. I'm pretty sure that had he not been injured we would have seen him up this year, and it's going to take some major regressions for him not to see at least 20 games this year with the big club. But that's just me.

Breen's skating is awful. Never will be confused for an NHLer let alone Bouwmeester.

Did you watch him last season?

He's 23 (right when d-men start to reach their prime) and he looked exactly like an NHLer last season. He's the Flames most NHL-ready prospect IMO.

if he thinks his skating is awful I think its safe to say he has never seen him, not just last year.

It's possible they'll be moved, but let's not forget there's a cap floor. The Flames can't have a team full of rookies.

I am okay with this as long as they don't dole out 5 year NTC's (or even limited alaTanguay) like they are candy.
