Couldn't they sign him for a contract that kicks in July 5th though? Am I missing something? Ramage's contract doesn't kick in until July 5th, so what would be the difference with Knight?
maybe it has something to do with burning a year or saving a year off their ELC. The CBA in's and out's are so tricky.
To burn a year off the contract, it would have been for this year (though the 50 limit would prevent that possibility). Starting it on July 5th would start the contract for next season, and not burn off a year.

Yep, I know they 'unofficially' signed him to a 2-year deal, but I am just not sure why they can't make it official and release it now. There must be something in the CBA that prevents that I am assuming, but I don't know what. Flames will not be at the 50 limit on July 5th, so to me it makes little sense why it can't go through now (not that I am complaining - I am satisfied everything is fine - just wondering why).
I'm really excited about this pickup. Good move! It's always exciting to see the Flames pick up a good, young player outside of the draft.
Anyway, when looking for highlights of Knight, I found the highlight package of his linemate and buddy Danny Kristo. Watching the highlights there are a few good plays that involve Knight (#10). I suggest watching the full video, as it is entertaining, but if you just want to see Knight's assists, go to: ~0:34, ~0:58, ~1:07, ~1:47
Also, let's pick up RW Danny Kirsto. Get 'er done, Feaster!

Didn't Knight hint at something big happening on draft day (or just in New Jersey in general) in regards to Kristo? Maybe the Flames have a deal in place with the Habs that will see Kristo also come to Calgary, and maybe they utilized that tidbit as more ammo to sway Knight to sign with us?
Former North Dakota standout Corban Knight has come to terms on a two –year contract with the Calgary Flames according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations. Knight just wrapped up a four year career in which he totaled 52 goals and 146 points.
Word is Knight, expected to play a top six role with the Flames, will receive the maximum level A and B performance bonuses with a $3.75 million cap hit, same as former first overall players Taylor Hall and Nail Yakupov. Not bad for a player once drafted in the fifth round.
Knight is due to receive an $810,000 salary plus $90,000 in signing bonus.
Expected to play a top six role? Wow
Rookie max in bonuses? Wow again
Well, I guess if its true, all you can say is......I hope gets paid the full amount. He would have to have one hell of a season to get all the bonus money.

Not really, 3/75 is just the cap hit. Not the actual salary.
Like Roof-Daddy said above, and what was freaked out about in the Cervenka thread last year.. if he ever hits that cap number it will be more than worth it.

If memory serves though, isn't that how Wang got to cap floor? Niederreiter was on a 2.75 cap hit contract, but only earned a small fraction of that amount. And rumour at the time was that he only stayed on the Islanders team so they could reach cap floor.

correct. They also gave Steve Staios a bonus-laden contract (800k salary + 800k bonuses = 1.6m cap hit). "Wang-Islanders solution" seems like a fitting name for the Knight contract in my book ...
If all the info in that article is true though, no wonder the kid couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Gets rookie max bonuses, a potential top six role on an NHL team and he gets to be interviewed by Kristen Hallet all in the same day.
We have no idea what the team will look like on opening day. Heck, it's probably going to look a lot different within the next 2 weeks. A little early to think he's going to see top 6 ice. I guess it could happen, but a little early to be giving him that spot already.
edit: not aimed at you ^ RF, aimed at the article.

If Knight was likely to be a top-two centre in the NHL, he would have been drafted a lot higher than the 5th round.
Most forwards who make it to the NHL - even most of the ones drafted high and with high expectations - never stick above the 3rd line. Knight is a great pick-up even if he settles in as a third liner. No need to pin unrealistic hopes and expectations on him.
He was drafted years ago- players develop. End of story. He would be drafted a heck of a lot higher than 5th round this year. I wasn't pinning any expectations on him, I was doing the opposite.
I would really like it if we could come out of the draft with some combination of Monahan, Morin, Zykov. Or swap Zykov for the best RD available.
No, No, you were right the first time- keep Zykov. This is a deep draft, we need skill and scoring- there will be plenty of quality D-men past the 2nd round.
