haha this is probably the last time the oil are getting a good pick. They have a lot of fire power already but the defence of the oilers is by far the weakest in the leauge. If you can't keep the puck out of your zone and out of the back of the net it doesn't matter who your forwards are. Ristolainen is a top 5 pick in any other draft over the last 5 years. If the oliers go forward here i see them picking in the 15-20 range the next decade.. They need d. D wins championships. People on calgarypuck tend to forget that

Could you explain how Ristolainen (or Nurse for that matter) make their current defense any better?

well ristolainen might be able to play day 1 (almost unheard of from 18 year olds). Most likely though both he and nurse will take 2-3 years before they are impact players. Its not like the oilers are going to be cup contenders next year anyway. you need d, that is painfully obvious to me.

They need decent NHL defensemen. In terms of prospects, they're deepest on the blue line. Not much at centre.

I still have no idea why some people look at NHL rosters when deciding who teams should draft. It makes no sense unless you're drafting at the top.

I would not say the Flames do not want Lindholm. I do think they would rather have Barkov or Monahan but Lindholm is no slouch.
EDM has 2 2nds, they could structure a deal including 7 + a 2nd for 5, that's true.

CAL can also offer value via draft picks, if they so choose, but the deal would likely take a different form by improving CAR's 2nd rounder instead of adding a 2nd to move up like EDM might. CAL's offer might be something like:

6 + 28 for 5 + 35

Who are those prospects on the blueline that make you say that?

I'd imagine he's thinking of Schultz, Klefbom, Musil, Marincin and Gernat.

Really solid group of young defensemen/prospects, unfortunately.

yeah those are good prospects... Klefbom and Musil look to be 3-6 defencemen. Schultz could be a top pairing d-man but he still needs a lot of work. Marincin and Gernat are pretty good too. But none of those guys are going to be the types of players that Nurse or Ristolainen will be. The oilers have no top-pairing shutdown potential, but they have several of top line potential forwards. You might be right they might pick lindholm or nichuskin... but those forwards are going to be useless if they can't get the puck from the other team.
