The only guy left standing would be Hudler. Would he want out as well?

Agreed we'll deal him at the deadline when, supposing he has a good season, we'd get way better value.

I think there is still some value for him. If there is a team with cap space and they think they are close to being a contender, the money won't be an issue for 1 year.

I wouldn't expect it to happen before August though as most of those teams will try the free agent market first.

How many playoff teams have that kind of cap space or budget to bring in his contract?

Would rather he stay and play out his year. Flip him at the next trade deadline.

Hardly surprising. I hope Cammalleri moves on to a competitive team and we get a decent return for him.

Ottawa seems to make the most sense with their handful of young, 2/3 line talent. Boatloads of cap space and a prettt good grade of prospects.

only problem is they dont have a 2nd rounder this year.

You don't think a first round pick in a deep draft is good value for Cammy?

I think it is.

Anyways, yeah I agree he would have more value at the deadline, but that's not a guarantee either, there is risk involved with hanging onto him, especially if he wants out. He could get injured leading up to the deadline, or he might have an awful year production wise, etc.

Personally, if he's asked for a trade, and someone calls and offers their first in the upcoming draft (anywhere from late teens to mid twenties) I probably pull the trigger, and with the Flames cap situation I probably look to take on a bad contract as well, and increase the return (picks for next years draft, or a decent prospect or two).

Problem with giving up Cammy is that we need some vets to make us atleast semi-competitive. He has name value to the fans of Calgary, and helps to put butts in the seats.

Ottawa, San Jose, St Louis are a few teams that spring immediately to mind. A team like the Islanders might be interesting too. A team that had success last year and might be looking to add another piece or two.

Just going off the top of my head though but think those teams have the cap space and internal budget.

My thoughts are to trade him at the trade deadline as well. His cap hit might be a stumbling block with many teams already trying to shed salary. Trade him at the deadline, and that becomes much less of an issue.

Perhaps you could get a similar deal by retaining some salary, and get a draft pick or two this year. It depends on what management wants to do.

It is nearly certain that he will be traded before the trade deadline.

I actually think Cammalleri is the most valuable veteran player we have now. Trade him and you are almost assuredly tanking the season on purpose, not to mention the cap floor issue we are suddenly having. If you move him to make room for a prospect...ok, that's fine, but if you move him just to move him...not a fan of that.

You wait until the trade deadline and let his play dictate not only where he goes, but what his value will be once this contract expires. He's been known as a bit of a selfish player in the past and if he asks to be traded with one year left on his deal then that will only cement that status and drop his overall value for his next contract.

If they can't get quality value for him, then just wait until the trade deadline.

My thoughts as well (bird in the hand is better... etc etc). Also, and you see this often when teams have the election to trade draft picks (Flames in the Jokinen trade, Devils with the Kovalchuk sanctions), it's better to get a kid into the system, have him work with NHL level trainers and get a year of development in than waiting a year and having a prospect be a "year behind". The upside of the possibility of a better pick/more value is usually outweighed by getting an asset now and starting to develop him.

If Cammy can snag a first or be packaged with one of our current firsts for a much better pick, (22 + Cammy for the 8-12 range), I would take it and run (I'd prefer the former).

hahaha. This is great. Now this will settle the argument if he can get us a 1st rounder.

Good luck with that.

Oops, I totally read your post wrong. I thought you said 4th round pick, not 4th, 1st round pick.

Easier done at the deadline for the Flames. He's not a $6 million dollar player anymore and closer and a $4 million player at best. Not going to be easy to find a team that's going to want to take on that money and give up a good asset while closer to the deadline he may fetch a late 1st (depending on the season he's having) or 2nd round pick as he's a good playoff performer. IMO he's UFA in a season and should just suck it up as he'll get top 6 ice time, top powerplay time and can put up points to make himself look more attractive in free agency. He'll get his wish near the trade deadline.

While I agree, when things aren't going well, Cammy does get out of sorts. Granted, the Canadiens were downright dysfunctional last year, but if he wants out and the Flames wait too long, he could poison the well which is going to be made up of young players.

Tough call. But a 1st this year in a deep draft is fine with me.
