Casino giant MGM Resorts International and entertainment company AEG say they've inked a deal to build a 20,000-seat Las Vegas Strip arena.
Officials with Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts and Los Angeles-based AEG say the joint venture will provide a centerpiece for a renovation of the area from Las Vegas Boulevard to Frank Sinatra Drive between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts.

What's the current arena situation in Vegas besides the Thomas and Mack? Has that ever been cited as a reason not to look at it as a market by either the NHL or NBA? I've always been under the impression that the reasons for being against Vegas go far beyond the arena situation.

Biggest problem with Las Vegas is the lack of hockey fans. Canadian tourists would enjoy it but that's not enough.

How could a team in Vegas NOT sell out every game? Winter in the biggest tourist attraction on the Planet?

They would likely sell out a ton of game just due to Canadian tourists and hotel comps.
Wouldn't have a fan base but you would generate revenue.

I think it would be pretty tough to build a resident season ticket holder base. Most people (tourists) would be in the market for single game tickets only.
Their area of opportunity would be in marketing tickets as an add-on to all the conferences that they have there, or an adder to hotel packages.
Off the strip, I think LV is quite ghetto and the financial crash had a huge effect on the city and real estate prices.
How many head offices are there and what type of corporate support would they get other than the casinos? It's probably limited. Or maybe support from all the big casinos would be good enough. Who knows.

I think Vegas would be excellent and would do well actually. Maybe this is where the NHL should be targetting to eventually move the Coyotes down the road.

This is a part of MGM's "The Park" project that they announced in the beginning of April. They are building an outdoor attraction between NYNY and Monte Carlo with shopping and restaurants that will extend back to the new arena. This arena is going ahead with or without a pro sports franchise.

I always thought Vegas had no pro sports teams because of the potential issues with sports betting?

I wonder if they'd go with a "star" player as a drawing card, or not? The "Celine Dion" of the hockey world type thing? Like LA did ?

I would think a combination of box seats sold to the casinos and single seat sales to tourists would make that a success. If the NHL wants to go down that road is another matter. There would absolutely be a stigma to being the first sport to have a team in Vegas.

Is it fair to say that many of the residents that have $, work in the evenings, and would be unavailable to go to hockey games?

1.36 million people in Vegas, they all don't work at the casinos. Also if u think outside the strip is dumpy, you obviously headed north. SW and S of the strip can be quite nice. We own a house in Rhodes Ranch and besides the slot machines at the grocery store, you would never know you are in Vegas.

Yes they would get a lot of Canadian tourist to watch games, but the fact is they isn't going to yield in as much revenue as it could in other places because if they don't develop a solid local fanbase then ticket prices can never be all that high, especially during playoff season. No tourist is going to spend that much money to watch a game about a team they don't care about (unless the away team is their favorite).

Las Vegas has been one of those fringe rumours for the NHL for a while.
I definitely think they could put a profitable team there. Perhaps not a very strong fanbase but as long as the casinos stay onboard with the plan to direct tourists to the games they should be able to sell out consistently.
The problem would be if something new and shiney showed up, Las Vegas could forget all about hockey in a heartbeat.
I also am not sure how good of a TV contract a team in Vegas would be able to get. The NHL relies pretty heavily on TV revenues doesn't it?

Why would a casino want to direct people to a game? Pretty hard for a casino to separate someone from their money when they're spending 3 hours at a hockey game.

Vegas Casino's comp tickets to every show and event in Vegas. It's part of the deal.

There are no existing teams for major sports in Vegas though, so a new NHL team could be the backbone of a new Regional Sports Network in Nevada. Then everyone in Vegas can pay for the team on their cable bill, whether they want to or not. Done and done. Vegas is right on the cusp in terms of biggest tv markets that don't have a pro sports team, and none of the other ones on the list are anything like vegas.Which of these is not like the others:
40 Birmingham
41 Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York
42 Las Vegas
43 Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News 44 Albuquerque-Santa Fe
