Is he Pronger good? Is he Hedman? Larsson? Erik Johnson? I have no idea how good defensemen are based on their junior play.
He's in all likelihood a complete stud. But do you think St Louis wishes they'd taken Toews over EJ? Take the forward, the D is a good BPA consolation.

Its amusing that a 4th rounder is considered an overpayment for a 22 year old top 10 college player who just happens to be a big, 2-way center. What exactly are people expecting to get with that 4th rounder? Do you play hard ball with FLA on this and pinch them to take a 5th - is that honestly worth it?.
Knight may not be a first round talent, but the Flames really don't have a great deal to show from the 2007 to 2010 drafts in terms of 9-12 forwards, or 5-7 defenceman yet. 2010 may yield something....but I've said that before from 05 to 08. I don't mind parting with a pick that would be about 100 spots into the draft to get a more refined guy who can step in now.

Phanuthier - Since you asked so nicely, I was referring to those who felt we should have waited until he was a UFA to sign him since he was already apparently sold on Calgary.
Had we waited until he was a UFA there was a good chance that we don't land him and then the fire feaster thread gets bumped by those same people who wanted to wait claiming we should have just given a 4th for him.

Happy with the signing but I wonder what it means for Bouma, Reinhart, Horak, Jones. I honestly hope Bouma is our 4th line centre to start the season and I have high hopes for Reinhart as well. Horak to the wing?
Sounds to me like Knight, Bouma and Reinhart will be battling for the bottom six centre spots.
Bouma is more of a LWer IMO. I think we only had him at centre due to lack of depth.

From a hockey perspective (and that's all that really matters, I guess), this is a good move. I can't stand guys who refuse to sign with the teams that draft them, though.

He wasn't going to get a serious chance in Florida as they have many other young centers they want to give a serious look to first. What what you do in his situation ? It was a career move so it would give him a serious chance at getting some ice time. That's the business side of things, no sense being a good talent and rotting on there farm team.
... Nemisz is a center, a position the Flames badly need to stock up. He has massive size at 6”3″ and should fill out to be a Joel Otto sized pivot. He’s a goal scorer, with a heavy shot and a nose for the net, a tough guy to move that TSN was touting as a possible John Leclair type player. His attitude is A1, and he’s a thinking player that is hell bent on improving and making the move to the NHL.

I think Tom for 3, Hudler signing, Cervenka (even though a bust) were his best moves to date. Maybe the Jay Bouwmeester deal too as I think Cundari is exactly the type of player the Flames should be getting (and we got a 1st).
