One of the best and frankly an underrated player. He's probably 1 of 5 players in this league who I would consider a no brainer to starting a franchise around. Maybe top 3.

At 34 years of age? He is too old to start a franchise around.

It's a no brainer to start a franchise around a 34 year old?
I'd argue it's a no brainer to not start a franchise around a 34 year old.

Still my favorite player in the NHL. Incredibly talented and hard working in both ends of the ice. He's what a lot of guys coming into the NHL should try and build their games around.

As great as Datsyuk is, 7.5M for a player who's going to be a couple days shy of 39 when the contract ends? I suppose without the retirement years to bring down the hit a bit that's what we should be expecting but I bet Holland is phoning up Lidstrom begging him to show Datsyuk where that fountain is.

Maybe jumping the gun when I said he's someone to start a franchise with. Maybe better revise that to "starting a team with". If you had to built a team for a couple seasons he's gotta be up there. Defensively sound, gifted with the puck, and doesn't take nights off.

Thanked the OP solely for the correct use of "re-signs" (as opposed to "resigns").

Detroit not afraid to hand out contracts that could bite them on the ass in a couple of years. Howard was another one.

A NHL fan would have to be dazed and confused about hockey to not enjoy watching Datsyuk play. Magician with the puck and so defensively sound. Smart move by Det to lock him up for another 3 years.

Eight more years on Zetterberg's contract. Seven on Franzen's. Six on Kronwall's. Some pretty out-there term thrown around on that team.
