Default Cherry: Malkin's a loser

I don't think it's the first time Cherry's made some negative comments about Malkin. Here's what he told a radio station:

Quote:
Canadian hockey personality Don Cherry is known for his outlandish suits and even more outspoken behavior, and he certainly didn't hold back when asked about Penguins center Evgeni Malkin on Monday.

"I wouldn't give that guy anything," Cherry told radio station WEEI in Boston of the 8-year, $76 million extension Malkin agreed to with the Penguins last week.

"I think he's a dog, a talented dog. He turns it on when he wants to turn it on. He couldn’t play for the Bruins, I'll tell you that. You're going to say, 'Well, what about (Jaromir) Jagr?' Jagr's out there giving every ounce he’s got every time. I don’t know if he can score, but he’s giving every ounce he can. You can't compare them."

But Cherry said he wouldn't build a team around the 26-year-old Russian.

"I wouldn’t have that Malkin. I know he's talented, I know. But to me, he's a loser, as far as I'm concerned."
He did have something relatively nice to say about Crosby:

Quote:
Although Cherry said his opinion of Crosby has changed.

"When he first came into the league, he was a hot dog, falling down, whining all the time. He's a pretty good hockey player. He's the best hockey player in the world, still, I think."
Do you think that Cherry has a point (as over-the-top as it might be) regarding Malkin?

Don Cherry is an old, real life troll who is very well aware that what he says will get people riled up.

Anyone who says they wouldn't build around Malkin is an idiot, AINEC.

Cherry is the very definition of a xenophobe. I ignore every comment he makes towards non-North American players.

Malkin played a hell of a lot harder in the conference finals than Crosby IMO.

Watching Malkin in this year's playoffs I agree 100 percent. His defensive game is atrocious. And he single handedly ruined way too many powerplays. He's a great player when he cares, he didn't care these playoffs.

Malkin puts the Penguins on his shoulders whenever Crosby is injured. That's not turning " it on when he wants to turn it on." That's understanding that Crosby is the franchise, and when he's in the lineup Malkin's role is different.

To EE: Idiot? Maybe his ability to convey his message is greatly diminished but you don't become an NHL coach and win a Jack Adams if you don't know the game.

I have always felt similar about Malkin. Not quite so vehemently as Don Cherry, but Malkin does have that tendency to dial down his effort.

He's been out of the game for over 40 years and just because he's a legend in his own mind it doesnt mask the truth which is that he's outdated and irrelevant. He craves this attention and I'm not giving it to him as he's not worth the time which is why I simply say; Idiot.

Cherry was a coach literally decades ago.
He does not know the game anymore.
He is a loud mouthed, hate-filled jerk who shouldn't be given any mic time on our supposed "public broadcaster" to spew his venom.
So yeah he's an idiot. I have no use for the man at all.

As far as I'm concerned, Malkin is one of the top 5 players in the world.

This is yet another example of Cherry being an idiot. Nothing to see here.

Not gonna lie, I still watch his segments, just to see what crazy Ol' Don is going to spew next. If nothing, it's entertaining to watch IMO. Even if I don't watch the Leafs games on Saturday, I try to catch Coach's Corner whenever I can.

Just take his opinion for what it is, his opinion. I don't try to glean anything else from it. The man does have charisma though, and I hope I look that good when I'm in my eighties.
