Default Idea: Carolina-Calgary trade (Gio for pick #5)

With Carolina dangling pick #5 for a top four defenseman, and the Flames nowhere near the playoffs for the forseeable future, is there a deal to be made here?

The idea would be that you make a trade around Giordano and the #5 pick, then you get to pick two out three from Lindholm, Monahan and Nichuchkin. We could take someone like Tuomo Ruutu back to help the Canes with salary and keep us out of cap floor trouble.

We'd be giving up our expected next captain, but if we're not going to contend in the next three years anyways, does that matter? What would need to be added to the deal (on either side) to make it work, if it could work at all?

Of course, this all assumes that the Flames are willing to go all-in on a rebuild. If the plan is to buy some UFAs and try to get 8th place, then they'd want to keep Gio around for that.

I think we would have to offer more than just Gio for that pick.

I fail to understand why Carolina would do this as well as why Calgary would even consider this. This is truly a lose lose proposition.

I'd do it but there is no way the canes do it. I love the idea of getting another top 10 pick and this is the year to do it

It would let us potentially draft our top 2 centres for the next 10 years. I don't see how we lose there. Gio's are a lot easier to replace than what we'd gain.

I've chosen to forego the nuisance of contemplating the details of how such a trade would go down, and will instead bask in the dream of owning both the 5th and 6th pick. That's the sort of thing that would allow us to take the risk on Nichushkin, or walk out with Monahan AND Lindholm. Just...just so glorious.

Giordano will be 30 in October. Why on earth would Carolina do this?

Gio, Backlund and 22? Massive over payment but likely what it would take.

Maybe not Backlund but I would throw Gaudreau in there for a shot at Nichushkin AND Monahan/Lindholm.

A straight 5 for 6 plus Gio is a no brainer for Carolina. They aren't as bad as their record, their blue line is very thin, and they aren't depending on this pick to be the start of a new age of the franchise. So taking one pick later is a viable option.

Aquiring Monahan, Lindholm, and Knight on draft day would be incredible.

Gio + St.Louis/Pitt 1st could get it done. I'd do that trade if I were the Flames. Depends on how badly Carolina wants a d-man.

Edit: Looks like we're all thinking the same thing. I don't think we need to add Backlund though, they have no use for him.

I drool at the thought of picking at #5 and #6.

I'd hate to lose Gio, but if Carolina would do 5th for Gio + 22nd, I would make that deal.

By the time Calgary is ready to contend again, Gio will be 34, so you have to consider him a tradeable asset.

Definitely and I personally don't see Gio getting better as he gets older. It seems like he is already regressing. Trading him now while he still has something in the tank would be far more beneficial to the Flames then letting his trade value plummet to nothing like Iggy and to a less degree Bouw.

Using Feasters words "We NEED to win at the draft" That scenario would be winning at the draft. It's a re-build and The thought of the risky Russian with the safe pick in Monahan (still want Lindholm but I get that the Flames are likely prioritizing Monahan) makes me drool to no end.

This team is 3 to 4 years from being competitive.

Do you recall 3 years ago, many people cryin for Flames management to start the rebuild? Asking to trade Iginla while his stock is the highest?

Now, we have a 30 yo top 4 defender who is at his prime, coming off a sub-par year but with a decent contract and still able to elevate his game. Has many tools in his tool-box, so to speak.

Losing Gio is not going to make this club worse than they are already projected to be. 30th.

Why on earth would we hold onto Gio? Why would we not move him for another 1st round pick if possible? Chance to use him with another piece (not backlund or our skilled youth) to trade into the top 5?

Thats a no brainer. Hes going to be 33 or 34 before the Flames are in a position to compete, at best.

Get what we can for our older assets, thats the point right? Rebuild?
