It is pretty clear who is more impressive to be the President of Hockey Operations for any NHL team over Ken King.

King no longer being in this position with the Flames would be a huge step in the right direction and bringing in Shanahan or Campbell.
King isnt the VP of Hockey Operations. He's the President and CEO of the Flames - that's the entire business, not just the on-ice roster. Shanahan, bluntly, is not qualified to do what Ken King does. But he would probably be qualified for the role of VP of Hockey Operations.

I wish we simply had a competent GM so that we didn't need a VP of Hockey Operations.

I don't think this stems from having an incompetent GM, it stems from having an expanding Flames group and needing a new VP of hockey operations to help Ken King.

Did the Bruins bring in Cam Neely because Peter Chiarelli was an incompetent GM?

I think you're being purposefully obtuse.

Shanahan doesn't need this job. He's not comparable to some guy who gets transferred from Calgary to Houston. He has a job, where he lives, that pays him well already that he was hand picked for after already retiring from his previous job as a mutli-millionaire.

Were I a millionaire, you'd have to pay more than double to get me to move from New York to Calgary.

There has to be significant incentive for him to want to change things up. Maybe there is that significant incentive, but, it is foolish to believe Shanahan is going to up and leave for a destination like Calgary to run a franchise like the Flames.

No they likely needed a job for a high profile former bruin, or they wanted a tandum approach to help our Chiarelli, which is fine. But the Flames already have Feaster, Conroy and Wisebroad driving the ship that is "hockey operations" for the Flames. If we need to add another cook to the kitchen, regardless of title, then we clearly don't feel we have the right folks driving the hockey side of our business, and that means Feaster, Wisebrod and Conroy aren't getting it done in the eyes of ownership.

Don't disagree. If the Flames were happy with Feaster he likely just moves up into the VP of hockey operations role and Weisbrod becomes the GM. That was likely the original plan but I think some of the perceived failures (O'Reilly, Iginla), deserved or not, have led to that not being feasible.

You just can't give Feaster a promotion after the optics of the last season.

One way or another though they would have been adding a new VP of hockey operations this offseason. Even if it was Feaster then Weisbrod likely moves up to GM, and they hire a new AGM and we still have the same amount of hockey people in the organization.

The incentive is he gets to run a hockey team, an opportunity that is extremely limited.

Would Shanahan prefer Detroit, or NY? Of course, but he is also smart enough to realize that he likely doesn't get that opportunity any time soon.

He has seen his buddy Steve Yzerman have go to Tampa Bay for his opportunity, another Red Wing product Jim Nill had go to Dallas, and one of the best executives in the NHL, John Davidson, have to go to Columbus to get another job.

None of those are marquee places either but in this business you need to take the opportunities that are available to you.

If this is true, I think this team has made a serious error in not getting, or attempting to get, John Davidson.

Its like the 'Brent Sutter/Dave Tippet' fiasco all over again.

Overseeing one of the 30 NHL franchises in the entire world isn't incentive enough? I think a lot if people don't realize that this is an opportunity that doesn't come along very often even to people that have spent their lives working in hockey.

If you take his word for it, he himself (JD) was interviewed and said there were never discussions and he felt bad for his friend (KK).

JD was on the fan960 radio recently and stressed very strongly that there was never any discussion between the Flames and himself regarding a position with the club. Went so far as to ppoint out he called King when the rumours were out there to make sure King knew he had nothing to do with it.

Of course, the rebuttal is "what is he supposed to say on live radio"?

Question cause I honestly don't know the answer, has JD had any significant success in this league as an executive? I know he's well liked, but what's his claim to fame as an executive.

Rebuilt a struggling veteran laden St.Louis team into an emerging contender within the framework of a highly scrutinized internal budget through shrewd drafting and trades.

He was President of the Blues for the last number of years as they rebuilt to what they are now.

2006-06-30 Blues - hired as president of hockey operations
2011-05-03 Blues - re-signed as president of hockey operations to a multi-year contract extension
2012-10-05 Blues - agreed as president of hockey operations to a buyout of the remaining 3 years of his contract.

Were you a former Stanley Cup winner, you would also know that working in the NHL head office you'll never have a chance to win another one.....but working as the head of a hockey organization that is financially successful and is looking for a new leadership group....you might.

Incentive enough.

Ken King was an executive with the Sun and the Herald so what kind of prior experience with being a NHL executive is that. He had none, there is no reason to feel Shanahan or Campbell would be a step backwards.
Maclean on the hand would because he is an idiot.

How on earth did we get to speculation on Doug Maclean?

Seriously, if the Flames ever hire that buffoon in any way, shape or form I may have to give up being a sports fan.

Mine as well hire Milbury as GM while they're at it.

Dowbiggin broke this before anyone else and seems to think it's a done deal so I get the feeling that like the Rangers hiring AV leaked last week the parties are just waiting for the right timing to announce.
