All the totes need is for some kid to break his leg or something and then find out he has super hockey abilities when his leg heals......or perhaps they need some angels in section 305 or something........

Gawd I hope this happens. Can seat 15,177 per wikipedia (albeit some sight restrictions). As long as prices are reasonable can see lots of lower mainlanders making the trip down I-5, would be almost as good as a second team in Vancouver (like a Buffalo to the Niagara region).

It's quite a bit further than Buffalo is from the Niagra region. St. Catherines is about 50kms away, with Oakville being around 120kms. White Rock is 180kms form Seattle, with Surrey over 200kms away. I'm sure some people will head down for the occasional game, mostly Canucks games, but I really hope the league isn't banking on that as part of the decision.

It's interesting that people seem to treat Seattle like a no brainer hockey market when there's really not much basis for it, besides it being further north. Junior hockey in the area does okay, but Phoenix had minor league teams for a long time too.
Personally I'm not sure what to think, it's certainly a large wealthy city so that's a big plus, but it's not a slam dunk. I wonder if hockey is still enough of a counter culture type sport to grab a big cult following the way soccer has been embraced.

Hard to say without the NHL ever being here. One apples to apples stat is Seattle has 2 WHL franchises whose attendance in the aggregate is higher than the league high Calgary Hitman.

One of the expressed concerns with Seattle is market saturation. They already have the NFL, MLB and MLS. Two WHL teams in the region, a AAA baseball team and a couple single-As. The purpose behind an arena is NBA. Add the NHL, and you'll eventually have five major league teams and a pile of minor leagues.
The metro may be 4 million people, but that is a lot of competition for sporting entertainment dollars.
I agree with valo403, by no means is Seattle a slam dunk hockey market, the Seattle area fans are very flavour-of-the-month type fans (aside from the Seahawks, who have a strong following). Once the novelty wears off, will fans continue to support the team and be willing to pay the high ticket prices? The Mariners have a pretty good young team and some nights are playing before crowds of less than 10,000 in beautiful Safeco Field.

One question is do those people become NHL ticket buyers at what are certainly to be much higher prices?
Truth.
Also, throughout these discussions on hockey markets etc..., people keep posting attendance figures with no reference to ticket prices. When analysing a market's viability, you really need to look at both.
There is a big difference in selling out the Dome or ACC at their ticket prices and say a southern US marketing getting a sell out when 80% of the attendees are in the building on $10 tickets that also give them two free hot dogs and a pop. Very different viability calculations go into those two "sell out crowds".

Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced today that a new $7 Florida Panthers season ticket offer will be unveiled during tonight’s Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks (NBC6, 8 p.m.). The limited offer, available for only 500 season tickets, will include benefits such as a free jersey, free parking, four free concerts at the BB&T Center and more for just $7 a game.

True, but you also need to factor in a whole host of additional things if you want to get a true picture of the situation, from lease provisions, rights to other revenue streams, front office expenses and a number of other things. No two markets are the same, you could put 14,000 in market A at $40/person and make money and put 18,000 in market B at $60/person and still have market A outperform based on other factors.

This is actually brilliant. It fills seats that likely wouldn't ever be sold anyways and it brings a pretty good amount of press along with it. That market is always going to be a struggle, the Dolphins would be in trouble if they didn't get rich hosting Super Bowls (which may become an issue due to the refusal to upgrade the stadium, which means no more Super Bowls), so creative promotions are always going to be necessary.

i wonder how many of the 9400 folks would be willing to drive the extra miles to whereever the NHL rink is, especially when you combine those miles with an increased ticekt cost?
