If you're an ambitious GM, league executive, or ex-pres of hockey ops looking for a job, why would you want to go to a place that's already doing well and fairly established? If they already have a good thing going they wouldn't want much tampering, or if the internal budget is limited your room to tamper would be restricted.. not much fun.
Wouldn't you Want to take on a team that's just torn it down and ready for a complete makeover and build them up from the ground yourself? Cause what's more gratifying than winning a championship with a team / organization that's entire makeup was by your own hand? I think it's stupid to say that Calgary is undesirable for those at such positions right now. I think we're a very desirable destination. So much opportunity for guys who want to build a team, have the money to do it, and the freedom and confidence of ownership to hire the staff they desire.
This is prime real estate right here.

30 NHL teams. 30 President's jobs. Very few are available every year. In some markets, they become available once in 20 years due to retirement.
Calgary - nor any other NHL market - will ever have a 'tough time' at attracting executives. It is laughable to even think so. There may be some 'preferred' markets amongst individuals, but if you want a president's job, you simply have to to take one of the VERY few (often, the ONLY one) available. Coaches get canned, GM's do as well, but with substantially less turnover. Presidents? They have considerably longer tenures than Coaches and GMs on average.
Calgary (nor any other NHL organization) will ever 'suffer' from not being able to attract top talent.

The original comment was that the Flames would have trouble attracting top executives who had other options. A guy like Nill didn't have to pack his bags and head off to whoever offered him a job. The top candidates are typically in a pretty good situation already, and under no pressure to jump whenevers there's an opening - guys looking for their first big break do. Which describes Shanahan and Niewendyk, but not Davidson and Nill.

Shanahan on the CBA negotiation committee with Edwards. Assume that's where the initial connection was made. A guy that Edwards's has some added respect for and worked closely with and would clearly be a "hockey guy" with his background.
Does/will he, in title and in actuality, work for Edwards or work for KK? If Edwards, then its a step in right direction. If for KK then more of the same. Though Feaster should be looking over shoulder as Shanahan is waiting in the wings and will outlast Feaster most likely. Will be interesting in how's this is packaged when it happens.

I think you split the role and have them both report directly to owners. New arena is a new job in itself and perfectly suited to KK's background.

The Flames aren't the first group to take a run at Shanahan.

Good hire, the best way to get a better on ice product is to hire more suits. Yup
Clearly the right time to replace KK is before the biggest draft in club history. It's too bad Edwards didn't have a short throw away season to get his ducks n a row.
This team gets made fun of because it deserves and earns it.

If King remains in the same position and Feaster keeps the GM job, then this hiring is useless and a complete disaster. Not even sure why Shanahan would want to come on board in this situation.
This organization just can't get anything right. Here's hoping they finally do this time.

This is how each play would go down:
On October 7th in a game with the Calgary Flames vs the Nashville Predetors an incedent occurred. Sven Beartschi, as seen here, goes coast to coast and dangles the jocks off everyone, including Barry Trotz. He then goes top corner and cellys hardcore. This is a violation of Shanahan commandment 110.12- Thou shall not undress any player(s) and 6936.41- No celebrating.
Sven Beartschi has never had any suspensions. He dangles like this all the time. He did not injure any player(s)
In conclusion:
The NH..I mean "I" have decided to suspend Sven Beartschi 2 games for being too good.
Haha It would be nice to have an active voice in the community though.
SHANAHAN FOR PREZ!

What exactly is the issue with replacing the hockey ops president before the draft? It's not his job to anything hands-on with the drafting. They need another suit because the new arena and overseeing direction of five pro teams is demanding all of King's attention. It's the most practical and common time to make this kind of change so your criticism is sort of strange.

The way the original report was worded doesn't suggest King is moving up, but rather out, and only staying on as a consultant to help with the arena.

Seems to be differint opinions of where King would end up. I tend to think Bruce may have a contact closer to the Flames than some of these eastern bloggers but who knows. We do know that this rumour of King moving to another position dates back a few months and it's possible the Flames are in the final stages of recruiting. I do hope that if it happens that it's announced soon so the speculation ends and organization can start getting to work on next season to which there is a lot of work to do.
Also if that rumour from Cox has any legs that King will be staying as president with the new guy simply being another cook in the kitchen god help us all because missing the playoffs 4 years in a row will become the least of the Flames problems.

Not necessarily. As the Flames' sporting empire has expanded, so too has King's role. He's the Pres of the Flames, the governor of the Hitmen and Roughnecks, probably also of the Stampeders now, and is quite involved in the arena project. King's role is pretty much to be the head honcho and visible face of ownership for the entire Calgary Flames LP.
In this scenario, King effectively becomes the President of the Calgary Flames LP - which he basically is now - and Shanahan (or whomever) President of the Calgary Flames Hockey Club. King's overall role remains, but a new guy comes in to focus on the hockey team alone.
At least, that's my somewhat ideal theory.

Campbell? Eff me. Apparently if you've been out of managing a team for awhile or have zero experience, the Flames are interested.
