I don't know about that. If we ended up with three 2nd liners/2nd pairing d-men vs one franchise player I'd take the franchise player every time.

Seems like most Stanley Cup contenders have a few great players. I don't see us building a cup contender with merely good players. I understand people think we need depth but I'd argue we need quality and top end players more than depth. Depth players can be traded for and signed. Franchise players can often ONLY be acquired through the draft.

If we can get a franchise player this year you do it.

Sucks we were 1-2 wins away from having our choice of one.

Bad idea. Keep our picks for this insanely deep draft. We will draft our franchise player next year.

The thing is that we are likely going to get two MacKinnon/Drouin/Barkov types the next two drafts as our team might have the least talent top to bottom currently in the league. We can get good depth now and star talent later.

I have a feeling we will be throwing in the towel for Sam Reinhart. He fits everything we are looking for: Father was a former Flame, Western Canada hockey boy, His older brother is here. It seems like it's destiny. Just like with Jones and the Avs.

After taking a look at some NHL equivalencies, I hope we do better than Monahan (despite his "bad team" factor). I like the offer. I'd be interested in moving up for Drouin, Barkov, or Lindholm too, though not necessarily with this particular offer.

Just take a look at the UFA list... decent players, but not franchise quality. Quality only comes from the draft.

Not interested in changing my name but I'll give you $50 if the Flames finish in the bottom5 and you give me $20 if they don't.

not surprised at the move; seems very much a Feaster move...make a big splash, try to show yourself as the best horse trader out there.

This is a difference in opinion, of philosophy.

Since 1984 only six number 1 picks have been a part of a stanley cup wnning team. Fleury, Crosby, Kane, Vinny, Modano and Mario.

6 in 30 years.

Sorry, I'll take the draft picks and leave the PR for fans

How massive is this compared to the one Garth Snow offered with all his 7 picks just for the 2md overall pick?

Another way to spin that is that three first-overall-picks have been Stanley Cup winners in the past 10 years. And this more accurately factors into consideration the much greater importance of the draft in the last decade, the way the game has changed since 2004, and the fact that the most recent first-overall-picks will not make much of an immediate impact. To put it another way, that's 3/5 top-picks between 2003–2007.

Sorry, but my money is on Tavares, Stamkos, and any other #1 pick not playing for the Edmonton Oilers becoming parts of championship teams at some point over the next decade.

Barkov. Looks as good as any Finnish prospect ever. Big, #1 centre.

The only way Stamkos wins the cup is if he's a secondary piece on a good team. He's basically this generation's Brett Hull (even in the manner in which he scores most of his goals) Hull only won cups with teams where there were several other players that were better overall than he was. With the Stars, they had Modano, Nieuwendyk and Arnott, all of whom where better on the whole than he was and with the wings who had Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanahan etc in 01-02.

Tavares might, but boy do the Islanders need a ton of other pieces. It's basically only Tavares and a bunch of mediocre crap on the Island. He might be wasted there until they actually start to spend/draft well.

I tend to agree with all of this, but with the rather massive caveat that all these players still have at least a full decade ahead of them in which to accomplish such a feat. The point here being that it is pretty foolish to make judgments about the relative value of the #1 pick based on drafts from the 80's and 90's in which the entire game and the business of hockey were COMPLETELY different. Draft picks have never been more valuable in the NHL than they are now.

I hate to say it, but I cringe every time I read about Feaster trying to make a move. Whether it's justified or not I just don't feel comfortable with him in charge. I have no faith in him despite my best efforts to feel otherwise.

Time for a change.

not sure why people are up in arms here.

go back over 10 years and see who has been drafted #1 vs #6/#22/#28, pretty sure you'd take the #1 everytime.

it was a bold, and i think a good, attempt, but naturally, team's that have the opportunity to get a top (or top3) spot don't want to let it go.

I am fine with feaster making the attempt, but would have been pissed if i were an avs fan if it went thru.

Irving had eye surgery and I don't think he was able to play. He wasn't playing in Abby either because of this.

I think those wanting Lindholm or Barkov need to remember the Feaster has stated they want the first rounders to come in and compete for a spot this coming training camp. Both of them will not be in North America next year.

Well I was never sold on Lindholm but if you get a chance to draft Barkov you do it no matter what. What Feaster said was he wanted that person to have the opportunity to come in and make the club, he didn't say they had to come in and be here. Barkov is exceptional, he is a no brainer pick no matter what.

Kipper didn't even play well. He let in a goal from centre ice.

Detroit and Anaheim were just plain awful.

With the picks the Flames have, I think you can add 3 solid players with one being a potential first liner in the near future. What the Flames lack is depth and young talent, so if your scouts have assessed this draft well you should add these first round players to your organization.

I think this attempt smacks of desperation and a lack of seeing the big picture. One potential star is not going to make you a contender next season or the one after that.

I would rather see some patience by the team ,which is looking to build a contender over the next few years, rather than a big splash.

Imagine MacKinnon playing on last seasons team and how they would fare over a full regular season.

Part of rebuilding is to build an NHL roster and that takes time.
