I feel the exact opposite actually. I have a feeling he'll be on the same level as Doughty/Pietro, or even better.

I always love how Alexandre Daigle is trotted out in these arguments like first overall draft busts happen all the time.
The fact that it's oficially the 20th, yes the 20th anniversary of Alexandre Daigle being picked first overall by the Senators and yet he's still the poster boy for draft busts in the NHL should tell you something.

Jones. Sorry, he looks to be a nice prospect and all....but, yuck.
Doing a deal like this for MacKinnon I can deal with, but to do it for Jones would make my stomach turn.

I'd make all sorts of offers and see what it takes. But, they probably have a better chance of doing the deal with the Panthers.
Roster players, prospects, picks, any combination should be up for grabs for MacKinnon.

Only after Jones goes first, otherwise a big no!

Same here. The kid has been a man playing with kids for a while. His dad was a big guy and he's got the same genes. Once he starts playing with men I think he will have trouble.
I think hes going to be an nhler but not number one overall material or top 3 to be honest.

In a sense I'm glad to hear what we heard tonight and the 3 firsts (or 1st and 4 2nds) will jump start this rebuild faster than pinning everything on a great young player.
Look at TB with Stamkos and Car with E Staal. Fantastic players but without a supporting cast they both finished in bottom 5.
Stock the cupboards and suck up the next 2-3 years. Do it the right way and don't take shortcuts.[/QUOTE]
I don't really see it as a short cut. Even with McKinnon on the flames next year they would have been a bottom 5 team.
|
Yes, they probably would be. They still could be if they have McKinnon years from now and you don't have a supporting cast.
Get as many young players as you can now, develop them and we could be in Chicago's shoes in a few years.
Building a team around one superstar worked so well for us before, don't want to go there again.

Good point, can't argue too much with that. If anything the Flames have lacked patience with building a better on ice product. In the past with our "win now" we mortgaged the future.

I would start "tire kicking" with Florida in case that does come to fruition.

Even in "deep" drafts, the late 1st rounders are still the equivalents of early 2nd rounders. It was worth a shot, and Feaster can't be faulted for trying.

The way I see it Jones is not built into his frame much at all, yet he's considered the best pick in this draft while MacKinnon is very well built. Once Jones builds into his frame he'll be great IMO.

The crazy responses in this thread suggest otherwise. Multiple posters have literally suggested Feaster should lose his job over this. Welcome to Calgarypuck, where everyone knows best, just ask them.

You need both. You need star players and you need depth. Just because the Flames totally failed to build depth around our previous star player doesn't mean we don't need one going forward either or that trying to get one is a bad idea.

Except this year early-mid 2nds are being compared to late firsts in previous drafts. This is an exceptional year.

No they're not. #22 is better than #38.
Unless you've done comparisons that I haven't seen.

MacKinnon is a potential perennial 100 point player... Just as the depth is exceptional, so is the top 4.

Trying to take shortcuts like this will just mean that we are going to be in a rebuild heading into the next decade.

Let's wait before he actually plays a NHL game before saying he'll be on par with Crosby, Malkin, etc. Because I highly doubt he will be.
