What bugs me are Auto shops that hike up the price if they know insurance is covering it. People should be going to jail for this.

Insurance companies have set rates and will only pay those rates. You will get an approved quote you can take anywhere that will use those rates. Most Insurance Companies have preferred shops they want you to go to that have agreed to said rates.

Do rates really matter when an hour job gets stretched and charged as 3 hours?

How is that even possible? So a fender with a small dent and a fender with a big dent are allocated the same amount of time? It's all about time and no two jobs are the same. Estimates are guesses on how long a job will take. You can't tell me auto shops don't charge insurance companies differently than they would for a customer paying out of pocket.

From my understanding time is based on the severity of the damage and what in particular needs to be repaired. I could be wrong but I think a body shop would have a rough idea of the time it takes to do different types of body work.

And insurance companies have appraisers that review all estimates. A larger dent would obviously cost more as there would be more damage behind but if it needs to be replaced it doesnt really matter.

Automobile insurance rates are revving up.
Alberta's Automobile Insurance Rate Board will allow premium levels for mandatory automobile insurance to jump by 5% after Nov. 1.
Insurance companies will be given the option to implement the full hike or part of it over the next three years.

What? The cap on minor injuries did not lead to reduced rates? Shocking.

Not sure if serious...

The injured deserve every dime the lawyers can get.

That's a given. The dastardly lawyers are what is preventing the insurers from treating us fairly and with generosity of spirit...

Is there somewhere where the insurers have to disclose claims costs? I would be interested in seeing that information.
