Just checked, you are correct, he was still an RFA.

Finally a proactive ownership! I'm so happy to read this. I was worried they would stick with King, Feaster, and company for a couple more years just since they are all new hires for the most part (aside from Feaster). But if the reports are true and they have as little confidence in the management team as many of us do, then it's fantastic that they want to take on some changes even if it means paying Feaster and the rest out.

Just wondering does Shanahan have any connections to Calgary, the ownership group, or anything to do with the Flames? Or is he just going to take the first team that gives him a shot in a management/executive position.
One good thing about Shanny is that he's already a better speaker/communicator than Feaster. That goes beyond just his work at NHL offices, I've seen him do some work with McCown and the like and he was quite good in those interviews.
He does have connections with Burkie too, as Burke traded for Shanahan (in the Chris Pronger deal) back in his Hartford days. Also both of them worked within the NHL head offices as well. Doubt it matters much, but I so desperately want to see Burke as the GM of the Flames I'll take any connections there are.

smart getting an inside man at NHL to understand the workings. We can get pointers on how to hit players in the head and get minors instead of suspensions. Maybe he can help decode the draft algorithm.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Feaster/Weisbrod have many years of experience and I think they still need time. Throwing things over to a rookie just seems like a desperation move.
If it finally gets King's fingers out of the hockey operations, then it's a good thing I guess...

I'd be willing to see how Shanahan would do, but very surprised to see how many "finally going in the right direction" comments on here. Very surprised at how many are simply excited by the name. The guy hasn't proven anything from an executive / off ice point of view. Fair enough he needs the chance, but how does us hiring an executive virgin = trending in the right direction? We aren't a struggling US market that needs to bring in famous names to our management team to trick the public into buying tickets.
Flames rollingnthe dice on a rookie exec. / former player seems like reaching again, I'd much prefer if they were bringing folks with proven track records to run this club.

SureLoss is for sure the quickest at reporting news items.
Breaking news stories?
I am sure he would not admit to that.

If this does come to fruition I could definitely see His brother brought in to some degree to work with the Roughnecks. A family affair.
Edit: I might be the only person here who thinks Feaster and Weisbrod deserve a little more time but I do hope he gets another year.

Guys who are good with proven track records are hard to come by.
We missed the boat on Davidson, and Burke's attitude would not work with Edwards and King.
Who else that is proven is out there?

Connection is likely with owner Murray Edwards; if this is about connections...
Feaster is actually a really good communicator; Shanny's video reviews always entertaining, but to say he's a better communicator than Jay is a stretch imo.
If it is true, I don't mind it. Ken King good business sense kind of guy - can focus on what he does best. It'll be interesting to see if a trickle down effect occurs.

Not saying there is necessarily, but that doesn't mean you go out and hire a guy cause there is no one else and because he used to be a good player.

This smacks of further ownership BS, quite frankly.
Bring in a guy as a figure head for a position while not canning any of the guys who helped run this team further into the ground?
You don't bring in Nill, you say no to Davidson, you say no to Burke, and Shanny is your guy?
Again, this is early speculation, but, this isn't exactly a reboot at all.
The organization has to drop dead weight, not add more of it.
I loved Shanahan as a player. As a league rep, he was abysmal. If he's got to answer to the same powers that be, he's going to be less effective than Feaster, potentially.
Now that Iginla is gone, time to clean house from top to bottom. get his buddies off the team, get his buddies out of management, get his buddies out as coaches.
Gut this ####er. More voices, more collaboration, more consensus? Smoke and mirrors, It's actually more bullspit.

Sportak of the Sun has picked up the rumour.
Quote:
Once again, whispers are making the rounds that Calgary Flames president Ken King will relinquish his post as team president in order to oversee the club’s push for a new arena, and the club will hire a new team president to oversee the hockey operations.
King couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.
Names bandied about for the post include the NHL’s senior vice-president of hockey operations Colin Campbell, NHL vice-president of hockey and business development and director of player safety Brendan Shanahan, NHLPA special assistant to the executive director Mathieu Schneider or even Brian Burke, who is currently working for the Anaheim Ducks.

Well, if the papers are reporting it, King must've given some sign off.
Certainly, specific negativity doesn't exist until King OKs it.

The Millions tweet kind of bothers me. Makes it sound that they have been looking at Shanahan for 2 months, maybe longer. I get wanting to make a change, but the best they could come up with is inexperienced Shanahan?
Don't get me wrong it is probably better than KK, but they had a chance at Davidson or Burke.
If Shanahan is the new President or what ever the title, he better do a good search for the new GM. I don't want him to go out and hire his best buddy without looking at all other options.
