Really hope this happens.

Don't know much about Shanahan and how good he'd be but he does come from a good organization (Red Wings). Wish the Flames jumped all over the chance to get John Davidson and Jim Nill earlier but this organization has always been slow to learn and behind the 8 ball. Suppose its better than not learning at all, like their neighbours to the north.

Would have preferred Brian Burke as well but given that he's not a good communicator and a very stubborn man, he wasn't going to be a fit for Murray Edwards.

Be interesting to see who Shanahan brings in as GM. Hope he grabs someone outside the organization who is highly touted, instead of John Weisbrod but would certainly have a lot more faith in Weisbrod than in Jay Feaster and the current situation.

Really hope an announcement happens soon, the Flames can't afford to screw up this draft and a lame-duck GM situation probably wouldn't help that scenario.

Been saying this for a while but tbey will restructure to a MLSE type of format.

King remains president of the Calgary Flames group, but not as president of hockey ops.

Sounds like Shanahan becomes president of the Calgary Flames hockey team, wont be announced until after the season though as he still has his commitment to the NHL.

Fan of the move, Shanahan is a smart hockey guy and has lots of connections and is respected.

Shanny's at least as qualified as Joe Sakic.

Wonder how attached Stevie Y is to Tampa Bay?

That would be bringing some winning attitude and culture to the front office of the Flames.

Perhaps, but Sakic hasn't done anything yet.

If Shanny gets this job, then they both begin from virtually the same starting point.

The moves Yzerman has done so far makes me want him nowhere near here.

Article was updated to indicate Shanny has been spotted downtown YYC.

Really? First year on the job and the Lightning go from not making the Playoffs to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Yes but doesn't mean either is qualified. That's yet to be proven.

One name; sureloss

Which doesn't mean it's for sure, but it means it's close enough to heavily discuss it.

Not sure why you're attempting to engage me in a debate here. If Shanny does get this job, it means that somebody thinks he is qualified, just as somebody had confidence in Sakic's ability in Denver. After that, what matters is not their qualifications but their performance.

Bishop for Conacher + 4th, Downie for a 1st, the Lindback deal, Carle signing all so far appear to be bad deals, can't really think of anything good he's done so far. He is pretty new to being an NHL GM, so he could improve.

I think the Bishop thing needs to play out a bit more, I don't necessarily disagree with that move. I like the Stamkos deal he got considering the numbers the kid puts up and he could have been signed to an excessively bloated contract like Crosby or Malkin.

I think the other big thing here is many of the younger players nowadays would have looked up to Yzerman as a hockey hero. Would we be able to lure some good, young talent to Calgary if we have Yzerman in the GM position? Because right now, I don't really see anything making players want to come here. And Yzerman was a good captain and leader, could he start teaching some of our young guys leadership skills that appear to be lacking in the room?

From what I've heard ownership meddling goes on to some extent with every franchise. The thing is in having a hockey man as first point of contact with ownership, he should be able to diffuse any poor ideas with a hockey based argument. Right now King says okay that sounds good, Feaster agrees and Weisbrod, may shake his head but follows orders.

This is good news but I question the timing. This should have been done a month ago. Maybe there were conflicts but if there is a shakeup at the GM position it seems odd after Feaster just had that presser and a few weeks before the draft.
