City council delays decision to limit nightlife on 17th Ave

My wife and I bought I home a few blocks away from 17th Ave specifically because we wanted to live in close proximity to the restaurants and nightlife of Calgary's only real "entertainment district".

Our bar-hopping party days are long behind us, but I'm not bothered at all by young people having fun in our neighbourhood. As somebody already mentioned, the noise from ridiculously loud motorbikes is BY FAR a greater nuisance. I wish the city would do something about that (are you reading this, Bunk?!).

Calgary and nightlife should never be mentioned in the same sentence. Although I dont frequent establishmets much in this city(moreso because there is no nightlife here), this review is absurd. Its not even a Canadian thing, its a normal Calgary thing, it seems to be a conservative nanny state of mind.

Every city, even in Canada has an area whereby its known for nightlife. Toronto has the Richardson area, Vancouver - Granville St, Yaletown, Gas town, Montreal - St. Laurent, etc etc. Yet in Calgary, they want to eliminate it. Its bad enough that Calgary is known to be a dead city when it comes to a nightlife/party atmostphere, except for the 2 weeks of Stampede. But to have even further reviews done will certainly make it worse than it is.

Electric Avenue wasnt even that bad, the problem was they had no police presence on the street till trouble erupted. Other cities have a police presence constantly on the streets where the clubs/pubs are. This eliminates some of the problems and can act as a deterrant.

As well, to move to the 17th avenue area (and its not even that busy anyways day or night, for a supposed entertanment area, its pretty tame) and then complain about the noise, night life noise and such is ridiculous. Dont move there when you know what it could possibly be like. Pretty simple.

over regulating for sure, good decision to delay, with 10th ave on the upswing the "problem" will correct itself.

On a side note, anybody seen how well Mansion has been doing recently. What a joke.
I'm glad to see the emergence of these new bars replacing ######y nightclubs.

Isn't 2-2:30 when all clubs/bars have to close and events have to end by? Thats what I meant by curfew.

I know a lot of acts get fined for playing past it.

Yup I've been to a few shows where the act is still playing and the lights come on and the set ends early. Really sucks. A lot.

In Calgary no line/no cover ends at 10 pm... in other cities it ends at 1 am. That should tell you how lame our "night life" is.

At least during Stampede it's seemingly okay to start at 6 pm

Inglewood might technically be considered one, but in reality, there is nothing entertaining about it. Other than a couple dive bars that have live bands only on weekends and the vastly overrated Hose'n'Hound, not much going on there. I live on the east side of Inglewood and naively tried to walk home with some friends from the Dome after a game, thinking we'd find something to do in Inglewood. Nothing. 9th Avenue was dead once the after-game traffic subsided.

I really hope they don't try to turn 17th Avenue into that. And thinking back to my younger days, it makes me sad to think what the city has done to 11th.

I'll echo the others about loud motorbikes and cars ruining patio time. I saw one dude on a chopper just circle the block for about an hour (nothing better to do?). The noise can get so incredibly bad at the Ship sometimes.

I can't speak for Inglewood and Marda Loop as I've never really spent any significant amount of time there, but I did live in Kensington for three years.

I love that part of the city, but it has a completely different vibe from the area around 17th Ave. I jokingly refer to it as "the coffeehouse district". It's a great place to spend a lazy weekend afternoon reading a book and sipping a latte (like a proper liberal elitist ), but it doesn't offer much for nightlife. There are maybe only five decent restaurants and pubs in the area compared to several dozen on or near 17th.

I live in Sunnyside and the problem with the Kensington is that it closes too early. It could definitely use a more 17th Avenue atmosphere.

Kensington is like 17th for old people.
