Default Canucks coaching job discussion - Update: Tortorella named new coach

So it seems like the Canucks should have a new coach in the next few weeks possibly. Rumors appear to be that Tortorella, Ruff and Boucher have all been interviewed.

Who do you think gets the post? I personally think Tortorella is the best choice for the sake of comedy. Would love to see how sacrificing the body and blocking shots translates into the Canucks' system and player personnel!

John Stevens has apparently been on the top of the list for Gillis for sometime.

It sounds like he's the guy Gillis has targeted from the start and he was waiting for the Kings to lose to interview him.

i don't know if tortella's style of play matches the kind of roster the canucks have (defensive, block shots, conservative).

i always thought the canucks were at their best when they were a quick transition team, that was able to quickly get the puck up the ice.

So hopefully the sign Torts. From a Flames fan perspective this is the best scenario.

Forgot to tweet about it but Jacques Martin talked to Canucks about the coaching job. #RDS

Mr. Personality himself. He would probably get them playing a close to the vest style that can translate into wins but it would be awfully boring for Canucks fans.

So who has all been confirmed to have talked to the Canucks?

- Eakins
- Jacques Martin
- Ruff
- Boucher
- John Stevens

Am I missing anyone who's been confirmed?

I don't think the Canucks are necessarily that high-flying offensive team anymore. They're getting a little run down. So if Gillis wants to squeeze the last little bit of juice out of his top players, Jacques Martin might not be the worst coach to extend the Canucks' 'shelf life' by playing a slower, defensive-style game.

But like you said, it'll probably result in wins, but my god it'd be boring for their fans.

John Stevens didn't have a great track record in Philly, then was part of a staff that struggled in L.A. until they brought D.Sutter in.

Think he is getting too much credit for a turnaround that only really kicked off when D.Sutter was hired.

I'd like to see Torts get hired...simply because he does not fit their style of play. He would also clean up their diving act, and make the Sedins cry.

I vote for Torts.

According to Ben Kuzma in The Province today, Scott Arniel and Glen Gulutzan have been interviewed. Sounds like Tortorella is in Vancouver right now also to be interviewed.

Pretty extensive list. I don't recall the Flames interviewing so many potential candidates the last few times we needed a coach.

For each candidate, the first question is "Is encouraging diving great coaching, or the greatest coaching?"
