Not sure why the shock at $500?

How much does a gaming PC cost? People don't bat an eye at that but $500 for a launch console and it's a big deal?

I didn't see enough to justify putting down $499 for the Xbone at launch. I think most people will wait a year before putting the money down. A lot of the games shown will probably come out on PC also and there's enough coming out for the 360/PS3 to keep me busy.

Also disappointed they didn't address and clear up the issue with DRM and used games and put it to rest.

Microsoft has set Sony up for a great reveal, I expect the machine itself to look a lot nicer than the XBox, and if the price of the PS4 is cheaper that'll be huge

I'm excited to see Sony's exclusives

Man, I sink $1500-2000 on my gaming rig updates. Console systems are cheap cheap cheap!

I don't think $499 is high at all.

It's a brand new console, all consoles (that aren't Nintendo) are this price, or higher. Plus we get BS Kinect (I'd prefer a $399 model with no Kinect).

I can almost guarantee that the PS4 will be the same price. Though if they went $399, Microsoft would be completely screwed.

Xbox 360 launched at $399 ($499 Canadian). I really though MS would eat the cost on this a little more and sell analytics to marketers.

There were a lot of gasps and "what?" around us at the announcement of the $499 price.

That's more of a game I'd play on PC.

So $549.99 CDN my guess, which is obviously stupid as it should be the same price.
Could be worse.

The price difference between CDN and US products continues to be an absolute joke. We've been practically on par with USD for how many years now?

Seemed fairly middle of the road, not a total disaster nor overly awesome.

Pricing surprising to many - it is still Sony's to lose I'd say. They come in at $399 and it'll be a pretty huge deal.

Well the 360 didn't come with Kinect at launch. Seeing how expensive the PS3 was initially I don't expect a company in Sony's financial situation to be able eat costs on hardware just to come in under Microsoft although they should have the advantage of not having Kinect type hardware to keep the costs a little lower.

Things were different then. Blu Ray players were 600-1000, a decent hdtv was well over a grand. Even Apple tends to launch their new devices at the same price the current version was, while other manufacturers go cheaper with new and improved versions of popular devices.

They are competing with tablets, especially for kids. As a parent, I am not going anywhere near a $500 console with $50 games, when a Kindle Fire occupies them pretty well for $180 plus free or $2 games.

You used to be able to justify the price of a ps3 for its abilities as a blu ray and media player, and now you can get way better in both those areas for well under $100.

Seems they have no interest in pricing these for anyone but the hard core gamers, and will probably lose out on the kids market, which is not very good for long term success.

This statement may have well been cut and pasted from 2005 and was no more true then as it is now.

The kids market is not a market Microsoft or Sony should target. They aren't Disney and chances are over a 5 year period a kid will get their parent to buy them maybe 10 games. A hardcore gamer will buy 3-5 games a year if not more. Microsoft/Sony make their money through game sales, not console sales.

Consoles have never and will never target the kid market.

Microsoft has been pushing really hard towards the casual market ever since the Kinect was first announced.

Is it a different time? Those 4k TVs cost as much as a new car. I am sure we'll see a new form of media player that will cost hundreds of dollars in the next few years. If you want to be an early adopter of technology then you pay big money. Hell an iPhone costs more.
