It's certainly more professional.
But you're right, neither are ideal and it looks poorly on the Oilers for even letting it get to the point where these were the options.

I think you guys are looking at this wrong. In all likelihood KLown and Drunky McDrunkerson probably were happy with Kruger at the end of the season... but then a shiney new toy came along. I think it went something more like this:
Drunky: Hey Lowey... looks like the Nucks are hiring a new coach, they got bounced in 4 straight. haha. At least we have our coaching stable with the best coach in the league in the Kruger-meister.
Klown: Ya, what losers, can't even win a game in the playoffs... look at all the rings I have.
Drunky: They are going to hire that dude from Toronto. Meakins? Bleakings? Something like that...
Klown: Really? Who would hire someone out of the AHL with no NHL experience... what dummies.
Drunky: Didn't we get Kruger-baby from the AH...
Klown: Shut up idiot. I got more rings than you.
Drunky: Anyway, I hear Dallas and New York are interviewing that Cheakin's dude too. He must be the new hot thing ha ha.
Klown: Realy? All of them want Greekins too? What do we know about this guy?
Drunky: Not much... I think he drives a BMW and I heard he's lactose intollerant...
Klown: Hmmm... married?
Drunky: Who knows...
Klown: We should hire him, as long as he doesn't have a hot wife who will hate living in this dump of a city.
Drunky: Totally! Everyone else wants him so he must be great. I never liked that Kruger ####### anyway, he sucks. Worst coach ever.
Klown: ok, offer that Breekins guy the highest coach contract in the league, guaranteed for 22 years. That should convince him. Plus show him a picture of our cheerleaders and send him one of those "Edmonton is the bestest" VHS tapes left over from the Heatley thing...
Drunky: f'n Heatley... Ok Kevvy, I'll take care of it right after I wash your car and pick up your dry cleaning. What about that loser Kruger?
KLown: Who cares. Fire him by that twintster or facetube. He's a loser...
Drunky: On it Kev. Hey, I heard that guy from Phoenix might become available too...
KLown: Gretzky? That'd be awesome!
Drunky: No, he doesn't want to coach anymore, he's too busy trying to clean up after his daughter.... the other guy... Topet? Tippen? Muppet?
KLown: Muppet..haha... if he becomes available will other teams want him?
Drunky: oh ya, fer sure. Our primary scouts, you know... the newspapers, all say he's the super bestest.
KLown: Well, if that happens, we'll fire this Peekins guy and get the Muppet. I don't like this Weekins guy anyway.
Drunky: Ya true, Weekins sucks..... ok I'l go hire him now.
KLown: Good job Mac. Good job.

The firing should have been done after the season but it seems like Captin said MacTavish wanted to hold on to Krueger just in case he couldn't convince anyone better to take the job. I belive that yes to you do fly him back to have a face to face and let him pick up his belongings and tie up any loose ends in Edmonton.

Oh old-Fart that was great, the only thing missing was Lowe yelling out "Like a Vipa" at random intervals.

At least it was more humane than the last time a Krueger was "fired":

i think it's a good move for the oilers. I think eakins can bring a young team together and get positive results, as he has with the marlies for several seasons now. He helped bring a guy like Kadri along very well, which i am sure something the oilers looked at, as it is imperative their young forwards finally take that next step.
I have been guilty of being in the "this is finally the year the oilers turn the corner" for about 2 seasons now. If the oilers make some big shakeups by moving guys like gagner/hemsky+ at the draft to fill their primary holes (size in their top6 and some solid Dmen that can play) i will be guilty of predicting the oilers will be improved this year. Hopefully this year is no different than the past half decade for edm.

perhaps CP wants to forget about Don Hay's ~60 games as Flames head coach.
The Rangers had Bryan Trottier for about 60 games as well in 2002
Not a coach, but the Islanders hired Neil Smith as their GM on June 8th, 2006, and fired him a month later. That was a great moment in NYI history

That pales in comparison to the money spent on coaches they fired who were still under contract.

You're missing the point. It's not just that they fired him over Skype, it's that they managed the situation so poorly that they were left with little choice but to do so.
Absolutely no plan here, just flying by the seat of their pants.

As others have said, it's that it was managed so poorly that it had to happen that way.
Clearly, Krueger did not appreciate it, there is no other reason for him saying Skype, and pointing out it happened over Skype the way he did in his interview if he was ok with it. He'd just say Mac T and I talked etc..., he kept referring to Skype because clearly he was taken back by it.
I think one of the keys here, is that Skype is not a usual method of contact for him and Mac T. Krueger pointed out, Mac T requested he add him to Skype so that he could do this. The problem isn't Skype, it's that it was managed so badly that Mac T needed to ask Krueger to get onto Skype in the first place so he could fire him. It's very bizzare.

Just how low can the franchise sink? 2 years ago fans were celebrating the draft lottery. Now they're celebrating savings of "thousands of dollars" with a firing.

I think it's pretty clear that Tambellini was a glorified coffer gofer for Lowe. He was absent when the Oilers were interviewing Yakupov and Schultz and had very little say when it came to player personnel decisions (they just trotted him out there to deliver the news).
To think that he had much impact regarding Renney getting fired is quite a stretch.

I obviously haven't been paying much to Eakins' coaching over the past couple seasons, I guess I'm just not sure what makes him mentioned so often lately. Is it purely his work with younger players, or is it more than that? Unless he's just the flavor of the month, there must be something special about the guy if he's getting interviews and a team like the Oilers are enamoured enough with him to fire their coach after one shortened season to bring him in as a replacement.

Coaching in the center of the universe has a lot to do with why a guy like Eakins gets a lot of national air time. That said he is supposedly a pretty good coach on his own merit. Time will tell if he's the real deal or another hot coach from the junior/AHL who's style doesn't adapt well to NHL players.
