Add ton of skill up front.
Then draft D from 3rd round on.

This seems too good to be true.. Especially with the Top 3 pick 2014 that is sure to follow... All hail King Feaster if he's able to pull this off.

The 2014 squad would be terrible without Gio and Cammi, Gio in particular. Let's not go full-oiler on this.

The key to not going 'full oiler' is to draft well...not to hang on to veteran players hat won't mean anything by the time the Flames contend again.
I'm perfectly ok with watching the Flames finish dead last next season, as long as the team is young...shows heart and effort every night...and improves over the course of the season.

Sure. But it doesn't look like the Flames brass shares your plan.

What a surprise, Flames brass think they can cut corners and defy common knowledge, and as a result the team stays mediocre to bad.
It's almost like we've been enjoying the results of that plan for the last 20 odd years.

I don't think the right thing to do is go full Oiler either. That is a team that has losing and giving up built into their culture right now. Tanking on purpose is never the right move
Putting solid vets that want to be here with hungry young kids is the way the flames are going. That is not cutting corners it is doing it the right way

I'm pretty sure the management knows we're a top 5 pick team next draft. With rookie goalies, young forwards, not much on D; they better know it and ship out vets that won't be needed. It's simple as that.

What are you basing that on?
I don't believe the Flame have tipped their hand yet with regards to potential moves made at the draft or heading into the UFA period.
You could be right, but we'll all just have to wait and see.

I agree...trying to fight against a bottom finish next season will ensure 'full oiler' IMO

To me, full-oiler means have an entire roster of rushed draft picks or rookies with no veterans players who can actually play at the NHL level. I have no problem shipping out a veterans to open up spots to players who are actually ready, but I am not so sure we need to dump Cammi and Gio, even if we can pick up a decent pick.

If the Flames rush players along, that is a separate issue to moving Gio and Cammy...as those players can be replaced with UFAs if need be.

We've started our 'Scouts Series' at Future Considerations, where we have select scouts talk about who impressed and disappointed them throughout their viewings this season. It gives a good idea on which way certain players trended throughout the year.
The first here is Dan Shrader (upper-midwest):

i just hope the flames use the 3 firsts, and would be pleasantly surprised if they picked up a few more.
The fortunes of many teams changed in the epic draft of 03/04, and if this is supposed to be of the same caliber, let's hope we look back at this draft 5 years from now as the draft that created the flames strong foundations.

This past season, Lindholm took just 67 faceoffs compared to 728, 663, 584, and 521 taken by the top four on his team.
He did win 58 percent of those faceoffs, however, best on the team for those taking more than 50 last season.
|
Took this from the Oilers forum... looks there's one reason why to take Monahan instead of Lindholm.

They played Lindholm on the wing (for the same reasons as Jankowski) so it would be an easier transition. He is a center.

Moving Gio and Cammalleri in the off-season for picks and prospects would essentially be tanking next season. Nothing Flames management has said over the last six months suggests they want to undergo a ground-up rebuild. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they sign a veteran goalie, and a couple veterans forwards for big money.
But you're right - we'll see.

I think Gio is staying. Cammalleri I think will start the season but I would think he would be the number one guy on the flames targeted at the trade deadline, especially if they decide to take on salary.

Ya, I really hope your assessment is wrong. I don't like taking a half-ass approach to anything... Either rebuild or don't!!
Anyway, a really good indication will be to see if the Flames keep all 3 1st round picks...or whether they move one for a roster player.

I have an idea!
How about we exclude our "unanimously voted" next captain out of any trade-for-more-picks scenarios...
