Exclamation Don't Snicker, there's a chocolate conspiracy

Quote:
The Competition Bureau has laid criminal charges against Nestle, Mars, and a company called ITWAL Ltd. for conspiring to fix the price of chocolate in Canada higher than it should otherwise be.

ITWAL is a national network of independent wholesale distributors.
The three companies, and three high-ranking executives who work for them, have been charged with conspiracy under Canada's Competition Act.

"Price-fixing is a serious criminal offence and today's charges demonstrate the Competition Bureau's resolve to stop cartel activity in Canada," said the bureau's interim commissioner, John Pecman
Quote:
The bureau found out about the alleged scheme through its immunity program, under which the first party to disclose an offence or provide evidence may receive immunity, provided it fully co-operates.

Subsequent parties that help out in an investigation may receive lenient treatment. In this case the bureau says a fourth player, Hershey, came forward and co-operated, so the agency recommended to prosecutors that the company receive lenient treatment.

I guess the only way oligopolies are going to be charged is when one of the players steps up and admits wrongdoing. I wonder how long the price-fixing would have gone on had Hershey not stepped up and admitted they were part of the gouging.

How much of the telecomm pricing is agreed upon between the parties and how much is a "a nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat".

Awesome, a retail gasoline expert. Can you walk me through exactly how you know there is price fixing in fuel markets?

You sound like some sort of industry expert so please don't spare me any detail you have or know about the industry and especially how prices are fixed.

Mar's bars the official chocolate bar of the Illuminati

Obama stands up in front of the White House press crew, he looks weird its like his skin is shifting and flickering and we can clearly see his reptillian form underneath.

Obama - "Puny stupid earthlings, we are taking over your world by inserting ourselves into powerful positions throughout your governments. Give up your free will and breed as a easy to digest food source or perish"

suddenly one of his aids runs up and jams a Snicker's bar into his hand

Obama (in a weird alien language) - What the hell is this for!

Aide (in weird alien language) - "Its a Snicker's bar you suck at hiding your true self when your hunger"

Obama takes a bite and swallows the bar hole, his disguise re-asserts himself and he puts on his most charming smile as he turns back to the shocked audience.

That's not how this works.

undercoverbrother made a claim, Flames in 07 asked him to back up that claim.

Are you suggesting fuel prices aren't going up?

Spoiler!

It is one of the few industries that doesn't appear to try to undercut the competition.

I'm not suggesting anything. All I'm saying is the person who makes the claim has to be the one to back it up. Voodooman was insinuating you can make a claim, turn around and do the ol' "Prove me wrong!" routine. That's not how it works.

Oh I am sorry, maybe you can provide a link to the rules of the internet.

All I said was "and yet the price of fuel continues to roll along......." as a consumer it appears that there is price fixing. In my industry we get competition trying to undercut our prices all the time. In the retail fuel industry there does not appear to any attempts at under cutting or gaining a greater market share through competitive pricing.

That's not the rules of the internet, that's basic stuff here. If you make a claim, you have to back it up. Can't believe you don't understand that.

Off topic but...

That's the tax man.

Between income, corporate, environmental, sales, direct gasoline taxes, etc... a crap load of tax is getting passed on to the consumer. Taxes on gasoline, both direct and indirect, account for a huge part of the government's operating budget.
