The more I watch this series, the more I think that Iggy would have had no place in the Bruins system. The Bruins require that ALL players play a 2 way game. Every single one. They even have Jagr backchecking. I don't know if Iggy would have bought in, and I suspect the free-flowing style of the Penguins factored into his decision to refuse Boston.

This Iggy talk is pretty ridiculous. The Pens didn't trade for him to be THE guy and if they did that's pretty pathetic. They have two of the best players in the world and they haven't gotten a single goal this series. They have a Norris Trophy candidate who has looked way below average for most of the playoffs and their goal tending situation has been a nightmare. Iggy is there for depth and I'd say 12 points in 14 games is exactly that.

Well the quotes are fact.

My 2 cents.

Just sickens me that it has come even this far, let's hope this is also where it ends.

Not exactly sure what some homerism quotes have to do with this conversation. I've admitted several times to being a huge Iggy homer while he was playing on the Flames.
Seeing as how you continue to put forth nothing of substance to the conversation I can assume no such evidence exist.
Seeing as refusing to give big money to someone pretty much kills the argument that someone was "willing to give their left nut" for them, well I guess that answers my question. Silly me to ask for a factual answer to a question.
Carry on.

I think its somewhere in the middle actually, he may have been acquired for depth scoring, but hes got to bring it.
You're usually not giving up first round draft picks for third line wingers. I have to think that Shero thought Iggy was going to slot into the top 6 at least.

I'm struggling to understand what you would consider to be evidence. Apparently the GM, president and owner stating that they want Iginla to retire a Flame does not cut it, so what would satisfy you?

My point was there is a big difference between wanting Iginla to retire a Flame which I fully accept as the case and "doing anything to make sure that happens" which is what was said earlier. Unless I'm mistaken it was said after he was moved that they were unable to come to terms on a contract as Iginla wanted more money than the Flames were willing to pay. To me this sort of contradicts the "willing to do anything" part.
It's semantics at this point but my first question was a legitimate one and the answers provided since have been of the "we would prefer if he retire a Flame" variety not the we will do anything variety.
Anyway... this has gone offtopic enough as it wasn't important to begin with and it sure isn't now. Back to discussing the impending sweep.

I have to agree. I really don't know where he thought Iginla would slot in on a Pens team I just don't feel he fits well with, but as you said you do not give up first round picks + for a third or fourth line rental.

I really want to see a BOS/LA Final for three reasons:
1) Flames will draft 27th.
2) I love gritty, physical, mean, a-hole, chirping, post-whistle brawling hockey. I may be in the minority here, but I loved the nastiness of the 80s and anything that resembles it makes me happy.
3) Lucic and Chara are my favourite non-Flames.

Who's overrated? Krejci and Bergeron may be two of the most underrated players in the league. They're the top two centres on an elite team that has recently won the Cup and is poised to play in another, and yet their names never come up in conversations about elite centres.
And how many casual NHL fans could name two Bruins defenders outside of Chara?

What conspiracy theory? You made a rather sensationalist claim and have no facts to back it up. Again it's quite a stretch from "we hope Iggy will retire a Flame" to what you said. We can even assume that they were 100% truthful as they may well have been. Obviously they were not willing to go to the lengths you suggested to keep him as when push came to shove, Iggy was traded for the good of the team. What you implied was that they would do everything feasible to keep him. Throwing huge money at him would be one way to do this, something they were unwilling to do. Sort of proves your statement incorrect right there.
|
I used the comments from the President, Gm and Conroy to back what i said. If you don't like it, call up Iggy yourself if you want concrete fact. This whole thread is opinions, so get off your high horse.
Also how do you know they were not willing to throw big money at him in the summer? Conroy said that when they aproached him about a new contract, Iggy said he did not want to discuss it until he saw where the team was heading and how the new coach would be.

I would pay anything to see another bench clearing brawl at the NHL level!
Thornton is kinda useless anyways. I hope he takes off from the bench and starts brawling with Quick or Emery.

Other than Chara, the Bruins entire D group is fairly under rated IMO.
Seidenberg, Ference, Boychuk and McQuaid are a real nice mix.
Now they have Hamilton, Bartkowski and Krug coming up to boot.

yeah. i would love to have Boychuk and McQuaid as Flames.
Ference has really impressed me too. Wasn't his biggest fan when he was a Flame, but he is still bringing it 7 years later.
Hamilton will become better once he changes his name from Dougie to Doug....

I had heard that they were far apart on money as well. They did not want to sign him to a big value longer term. I don't know if it came from the Flames or I read it on here though. The line is sometimes blurry.
Iggy has to come to terms that he is not top line any more. If he wants to sign for money he will sign a higher $$/ longer term deal from a team that is on the outside looking to move into the playoffs.
If he wants to win a cup I think it will be lower $$/ 1-2 year deals to contenders. Or go to LA - they just gave Reggie $6 mil?

What I've been noticing is people ripping apart Pittsburgh for their bad play, but no one really gives props to Boston about how incredibly well they are playing. I can't remember the last time I've seen a team with such tight defense and full control of the game. Boston is just a bigger, nastier team and Pittsburgh is clearly rattled. Last night the Penguins finally shown a ton of life but just couldn't get that extra goal
Yeah I'm bummed Iginla isn't getting the cup this year but what can you do
Boston vs. LA/Chicago will be some entertaining hockey but I still hope to see Regehr get his cup atleast

He has no one to blame but himself.
Iginla should have looked at the rosters and realized that Boston's was way better than the Pens weak d and goaltending.
Not only that his next contract is shrinking by the day.
