Something went wrong for me alright. I had PRK done on my eyes last February, and I had an extremely rare reaction that caused my corneas to scar badly. Now, I have terrible vision, and I am awaiting cornea transplants.

That kind of reaction to laser eye surgery is rare, though. What I'd say is avoid the super-cheap places. Also, inquire as to whether they use a broad-beam laser or one of the newer ones with a really narrow beam (such as IntraLase FS mentioned by Nehkara above). The narrower beam generates less heat which reduces the risk of corneal haze. I wish I had known that before. Also, WaveFront technology is quite beneficial (I think it maps the eye). Most places have that now.

Don't be nervous because of what happend to me, though. Almost no one ends up in a state like I have. It's important to do your homework, and I think it's probably best to avoid the bargain places. That way you get more knowledgeable doctors who use more recent technology. Ultimately, that could be the difference between seeing clearly, and not.

How is that supposed to help any of us if we're already looking at the 'exact' place to get surgery done on our eyes?

So, I had the surgery on Monday and it went very well. The 1st day postoperatively (yesterday) I had 20/20 vision in both eyes. I am back to work today. I have no pain or irritation in my eyes (after only 2 days).

I am extremely happy with Gimbel, they were just excellent.

I would recommend the procedure to anyone.

I was always wondered about the Air Force and corrective eye surgery. It seems like every Chinese guys has bad vision, I'm surprised China even has an air force

Does laser correction have any effect on night vision? I read something awhile ago about how it could lead to decreased night vision or night blindness

The only side effect that I am still experiencing is halos around lights at night or early in the morning but that is a normal side effect and should go away eventually.

I am loving my glasses-free life.

70% of Asians are nearsighted... so that still leaves 30% or 400,000,000 people to choose from!!!

Night vision used to be really affected with the old procedures due to corneal scarring (think of a crack on your windshield and what it does to oncoming headlights). Today, the scarring is significantly less, and only those people with really large pupils will have problems (or botched surgeries).

Yeah- everyone experiences at least a little bt of corneal haze after laser eye surgery. It goes down after a while to be like it wasn't even there.

I wasn't that lucky, but mine was an extreme case from the get-go. You'll be just fine.

Hey guys,

bumping a thread for opinions and any new experiences with you all.

I am booked to have PRK done on June 20th at Gimbel with Dr. Jacinthe Kassab. Dr. Gimbel is available on July 11th and Dr. van Westenbrugge on July 19th.

I have taken the appointment to hold a place for now, and they fine with any cancellation or rebooking.

In the meantime, I am reading lots on experiences, watching PRK videos online, and doing other research.

I am 26, my eyes have been stable at -1.25 and -1.5 for a long time now, I got my eyes mapped out in August of last year at Gimbel's office, but was rushed to get back to University without allowing for sufficient healing time.

This summer however, I am in a personal hurry to get the procedure now, except that I have my final course to take online on June 24th-August 8th in order to apply for October graduation in Engineering. So in all reality I may be waiting again to get the procedure done in August, as I wanted to give myself atleast 3 weeks to relax after.

Have any of you gotten Lasik or PRK done since 2007? how has it been? Hesla, as an optometrist, has any of your opinions changed since?

I had PRK done with Dr. Gimbel in August 2008. As you know, PRK does take a bit more healing time and I wouldn't want to do heavy reading shortly after the surgery. I took 5 days off work after mine - that was what was recommended by the clinic. The first three days I had limited vision, by the fourth day my vision had improved quite a bit (I think the contacts that were put in to protect the cornea came out on day 4), but I didn't have full 20/20 for a number of weeks. I was cleared to drive after the first week, I believe. My prescription was much worse than yours - -5.5 and 5.75 and nearly five years later, I'm just shy of 20/20 (small regression not needing glasses at this point)

I'd schedule a week of healing time with it, personally.

7-10 days recovery at the most. With your Rx it is likely sooner.

Dr. Kassab is excellent and i would keep the appointment with her.

PRK is safer than ever and it is worth it, at your age, to get it done as you would have 15yrs correction free.

Good things to hear.

I guess I am now left to decide as to get both done at once or one at a time. With longer recovery times I'd be tempted to get them both out of the way, but I need to weigh it with the risk of problems.
