if we don't move up, i'm going to be very happy with getting monohan. without knowing how they go head to head, i still think i'd rather use the 6th pick on him than lindholm, but wouldn't be disappointed either way, unless monohan goes to the oilers.

The Oilers are going to get a good player regardless of who we select. The Flames need to be concerned about who best fits their needs and select that player. I think it's Lindholm but I can understand the allure of Monahan. I don't think either player is going to turn the fortunes of the team around by himself. Lindholm/Monahan, Bartschi, Gaudreau, Jankowski, and the two other players we select in the 1st round this year will all contribute to the turnaround of this franchise. They are all important and will play a role. One guy is not going to do it by themselves.

EDIT:
Actually, it's ridiculous how many teams have more than one 2nd round pick in this years draft.
Montreal -> #34 #36 #55
Winnipeg -> #43 #59 (Plus Hawks 2nd)
San Jose -> #49 #50 (Plus Pens 2nd)
Buffalo -> #38 #52
Edmonton -> #37 #56
Dallas -> #40 #54
That's 15 of this years 2nd round picks (50%) held by just SIX teams.
|
How would people think about trading the STL pick for a later first rounder and a second round pick.
Would be exciting to have a couple of firsts and 3 2nd rounders in this deep draft. Conversely, could trade both the Pitts and STL picks for 2 2nd rounders each. 5 picks in the top 60? That would jumpstart the rebuild in a big way. And given the depth of this draft, the more picks you have, the greater chance you have of landing future NHLers.

Would trading Tanguay to the Avs for Colorado's 2nd round pick (assuming they still have their own and it is at 32 or so) be a fair trade for both teams?

That was kind of what I was thinking. I don't think there really is a workable package with Tanguay to get the first overall, but something like this gives the Aves two impact players.

I'd rather we not trade the late 1st for two seconds and just take a player with a higher probability than two with lower.

We would have to take contract back, or pay some of Tanguay's salary, in any deal with Colorado. They're still in internal budget team, the cap is shrinking, and they're trying to digest O'Reilly's contract.
I think a deal for Stastny makes sense for both teams - the Flames lack a #1 or #2 centre, and Stastny is an upgrade on Backlund. With that in mind, Tanguay could be part of a deal with Colorado.

Shane O'Brien comes back - we get a physical d which we lack and dump Tanguay's salary. Would he want to go to COL though?

Not sure why the Flames would need to include the first round pick given Stastny's contract situation. Other than that, I think it would make a good amount of sense to add Stastny.

Dhiren Mahiban @dcmahiban 44s Been told by source close to #NHLJets they don't plan on picking 13th at #NHLDraft. Looking to move inside top 10, to 5th spot if possible
May have impact on the Flames if the Jets are able to get Carolina's pick.

Now I know that Feaster has said that they are not going to trade the #6 pick down. But would you swap picks with the Jets?
Trade #6 to Winnipeg
For #13, #43, and Alexander Burmistrov

I truly believe the Flames will not move down from #6.

That is very tempting. I'd be inclined to do it. Four players from the first 45 and a NHL player capable of playing in the top six? Yes, I think I do that based on comments coming out of the combine.

I'd consider it if Morin is off the board, otherwise grab the giant and run.
The idea of having a huge, skilled, Chara-like Dman on the back end makes me drool. With his size and the skill and speed he is being said to have, we would be crazy not to grab him up as soon as possible.
What is even more exciting is the idea of ending up with Morin and Breen both successfully transitioning to the NHL.

I wouldn't do it. Too much talent at the top end this year and we need quality vs quantity. Plus as it sits, Burmistrov could probably be had at a low price, I wouldn't be involving draft picks or trading down the talent pool to get him.
