Yay for Islam, again

More than 200 male students protested in Kabul yesterday against women's rights, calling for the repeal of a presidential decree on the 'Elimination of Violence Against Women', which they say is un-Islamic.
The decree bans child and forced marriage, makes domestic violence a crime and says that rape victims cannot be prosecuted for adultery. It also outlaws "ba'ad," a traditional practice of exchanging women or girls to settle disputes or debts.

I doubt Ricky is poking at anyone but the cheap biblethumpers!

When a "god" sends his angels down to feed the survivers and rebuild the homes lost in this disaster I'll pray right along with them, until then I hope my small donation of $100.00 helps a little bit.

Talk about religious stupidity. sad story.
Quote:
When Brandon Schaible got a rash, his parents prayed

When the 7-month-old became irritable with diarrhea and lost his appetite, his parents, Catherine and Herbert Schaible, prayed again.

When Brandon had trouble breathing and gasped for air, his parents called a pastor - this, in spite of the fact that a judge had ordered them to call a doctor.

The Schaibles are lifelong members of the First Century Gospel Church in Philadelphia, one of several religious groups in the U.S. that relies on faith, and eschews most medical care.
Founded in 1925, the First Century Gospel Church is an offshoot of Faith Tabernacle Congregation, also in Philadelphia. Both churches believe that God - and God alone - heals the sick.

Brandon Schaible died on April 18 from bacterial pneumonia, dehydration and strep, according to the district attorney’s office – all treatable with antibiotics.

On Wednesday his parents were charged with third-degree murder.

The Schaibles are already on probation for the 2009 death of another son, Kent, who died from bacterial pneumonia. A jury convicted the couple of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced them to 10 years probation.

In a media interview last month, Pastor Nelson Clark of the First Century Gospel Church, said the Brandon and Ken Schaible died because of their parents’ “spiritual lack.”

Idiots.

A bold step like charging the pastor with accessory to murder is needed to stop this ######ation, sadly we know no one would have the balls to do it.

So far I like the new pope. He seems much more focused on doing good in the world than doctrine. It will be interesting how he handles the big stands the church took on Birth Control and Homosexuality. Hopefully in a much more Jesus died for everyone stance then his predecessors.

As an Atheist it's kind of a catch-22. Though the stances of previous popes have been damaging in a lot of ways around the world, it has also lead to a movement away from the church. A pope more accepting of different people and practices is of course a positive for Christians, but it would also slow the self destructive path the church has been on for a century. So what's the better result, the "modernization" of the Catholic church or it's eventual fall into irrelevance?

Even though the pope is infallible, he is wrong says vatican spokesman:

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013...?utm_hp_ref=uk

Quote:
The Vatican has clarified that atheists will still go to hell if they reject God, after Pope Francis broke with tradition to deliver a homily stating non-believers who do good will be redeemed through Jesus.

The Pope's words made headlines around the world after he gave an unprepared speech in which he emphasised the importance of “doing good” as a principle which unites all humanity.

After international media attention, the Vatican attempted clarify how exactly one gets in to heaven, with Rev. Thomas Rosica, a Vatican spokesman, saying that people who know about the Catholic church “cannot be saved” if they “refuse to enter her or remain in her.”

That is, atheists are still going to hell.

He's previously made his position on homosexuality quite well known:

So stupid. The Pope is not wrong. He was just communicating an extremely common piece of Christian doctrine. The fact that the Vatican has to clarify this at all is just further testimony to the rather obvious fact that Catholics don't even understand their own theology.

I think it's just a clarification. The Pope is saying that Christ came to redeem all and he's trying to get people to meet in the middle by "doing good" instead of fighting over their differences.

However, official Catholic doctrine has reiterated time and time again that it is the "one true Church" according to them. Popes come and go, but Vatican councils and organizations seem to have the last say as they have the lasting power.

There probably just happens to be some leeway in how you interpret the other Catholic beliefs like purgatory allowing others to get saved...

It's funny because it's adults issuing press statements over made up stuff.

You can't "confirm" something you imagined. It's functionally the same argument as "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"

To suggest that the pope is infallible also suggests that Catholic doctrine is 100% correct. As a former Catholic who is a Christian, I'd argue that this is not the case.

If you believe that god's word never changes (as I believe), if the pope is infallible why then have different popes ruled differently on matters of faith? If God's word never changes, how then can different popes rule differently and both be right?

According to my logic, the pope cannot be infallible on matters of faith.
