The Senate is facing widespread criticism over an expenses scandal. Trudeau is convinced the solution lies in improving the Senate — the existence of which, in his opinion, benefits Quebec greatly.
“To see the reaction of francophones outside Quebec and especially Quebecers who understand at some level that it is the weight of the Senate that ensures —” he said, without completing his sentence. “We have 24 senators from Quebec and there are just six from Alberta and British Columbia. It’s to our advantage. To want to abolish it is demagoguery. We’ll have to improve it.”
he knows he's running for prime minister of Canada right?

not prime minister of Quebec?

I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of polls. They're not intended to predict an election far into the future, but to judge the public's mood right now and to point out trends.

He doesnt give a lick about Canada...he is looking only for wins in his home province and win enough in Ont to wrestle away power from the CPC.

Also, it should be noted that these scandals are just making the polls worse for Conservatives. The Cons have only led in 1 (April 6th by Abacus Data) of the last 10 national polls.

However, it doesn't take much to swing the voters and even if the numbers stay exactly the same from now until Fall of 2015, they can shift drastically during a campaign.

Should be interesting to watch.

You realize Harper does the same thing right?

Just replace Quebec with Alberta.

I'm not saying I'm a Trudeau supporter but to win government you need Ontario plus one of the other big population bases. Harper focuses on the West, Trudeau on Quebec.

As an Albertan you totally should be backing the Alberta horse. Same reason as a Québécois you should be backing the Quebec horse.

As a Maritimer we're screwed regardless.

Not really. Harper can screw Alberta too (e.g.: income trusts and not forcing BC into Northern Gateway) because we vote for him anyways.

Our vote is a given for every single party out there, and that's why none of them have to cater to us.

It's hard to try to paint them as being exclusively from a province and having those interests as their motivation when both of them have lived in different places and have heritage from all over. I hear where you are coming from but it's not really that simple, their ideologies are way more significant then where they've lived.

The thing is Harper isn't fully an Alberta horse, he lives in a nice safe conservative seat out here in the west and of course went to U of C after he dropped out of U of T but he was born and raised in Ontario and has pretty much lived in Ottawa since 1993 (first term as an MP) and he hasn't really done a lot exclusively for the west that has stood out for me.

Trudeau's mom is from BC and he lived in Vancouver for a while, mostly Quebecois in upbringing but if I recall correctly even PET's mom was Scottish so he's like 25% French.

They both pander to the groups that feel some kind of ownership of them a bit rhetorically but I think that's all it is.

You do know that protecting Quebec has historically been one of the functions of the Senate, right? Right or wrong, he's not really breaking new ground here.

Ok, if we are going o play that card, then please explain to me how Alberta is a threat to Quebec culture or sovereignty, today.

What Trudeau did with this is revolting. The happiest people in the world with this are the quebec seperatists who would make a fortune if they did a fundraising dinner in Alberta after this, ala Christie Clark.

Trudeau said it is Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives who want to hurt B.C. and Alberta by pushing to create an elected Senate without making other changes.

Giving senators additional democratic legitimacy by electing them will make the Senate more powerful. Unless the seat distribution is changed, Trudeau said, that will hurt B.C. and Alberta which are grossly under-represented in the Senate given their populations and economic clout.

“Electing senators will have a terrible impact on the West,” Trudeau told The Sun.

The Canadian Constitution gives B.C. and Alberta only six senators each of the total of 105, while guaranteeing New Brunswick and Nova Scotia 10 senators each.

Good old Tranny. Demands the highest standards and burden of proof wrt to Rob Ford, doesn't give a lick what the truth is wrt Trudeau.

You better get over to the 'Robocall' thread. Someone is saying bad things about Stephen Harper. He needs you now, more than ever.

As I figured, the quote isn't quite as cut and dried as diane wanted us to believe.

Quote:

True

Quote:

“Electing senators will have a terrible impact on the West,” Trudeau told The Sun.
Also true

Quote:
Quebec’s 24 seats in the Senate represent a proportion of the upper chamber seats in line with the province’s share of the national population. Atlantic Canada, however, has 30 of the 105 seats despite having just seven per cent of the population.
But nice Fox News style cherry picking there diane.

How about a debate without resorting to this bush league crap?

Outside of stealing hundreds of millions of taxpayer money in numerous scandals wich screwed over all Canadians save for maybe Quebec, he tried his damndest to screw over Alberta with Kyoto. I'm still embaressed to say I lived in a country to which he was the prime minister.

Oh good lord. I don't even know where to begin. Perhaps here: people in Quebec don't pay federal taxes now?

Good thing all of that stopped once the Conservatives got in.
