Regardless of contractual status, that is crazy.

Comeau played well down the stretch and showed he could be a 3rd/4th line player. He was also on an expiring contract that had been payed mostly by the flames. So yes contract lenght and status has big part on being able to trade.
If the flames get a 2nd round pick, it will probably be from trading down from the Pitt pick.

Do you not think Tangs could fetch us a 2nd rounder ? I know he has a modified trade clause and all- but after Iggy is gone now, he may not be too excited to be part of a re-build and may like being shopped to a more competitive team. The only other possible guy who could fetch us a second rounder without a NTC is Hudler, and I kinda want to keep him and Stempniak, who I'm not sure could fetch us a 2nd- plus we lack in RW so we best keep Stemps. However, we are log- jammed at LW.

List or not I'm left wondering how far Jones will fall, if his lack of compete in big games bewilders me imagine what GM's think.

The poster I responded to asked do we agree we have to take a defenceman in the first round. I agree with your assessment of "probably wise", but it's not totally committed to it like he was asking. Even if we are swaying a bit from best player available strategy to try to fill some positional needs, it's hard to say how the draft will shake down and I wouldn't take a defenseman with our second or third picks if other players still available are way higher on the Flames' list.

He did score a nice goal tonight though which he helped set up. That being said, I personally would take MacKinnon 1st overall regardless of who I have on my team at the time and work around it later. However, I still have a feeling that Colorado will still take Jones as he wasn't completely invisable.

Jones was very good last night... He was easily the best defender on the ice.
Also you must have missed his U20, and U18 performances if you think he is not a big game performer because he dominated those tournaments.
The kid is the real deal. In saying that I would not select him first overall because I am not a fan of doing so with defenders, especially when an elite talent like Nathan Mackinnon is sitting there waiting to be selected.

The Colorado thing is really interesting. It's clear to me and to most that they were tanking for Jones; but with Mackinnon's outstanding tournament and with Patrick Roy joining them, a guy who probably saw a lot of Mackinnon, I wonder if they may change their minds?

I'm sure nobody is more interested in this than the Panthers who will gladly pick either of the two players that the Avs pass on. I took from the disappointed look on Tallon's face when they lost to the Avs that he felt they were losing out on Jones.

You took all that from the look on his face? I'm impressed.

Yes it is impressive. Considering they placed a lot of emphasis on Jones and at the time (and still now) was considered the top prospect. I expect he knew he had to get #1 to garantee Jones given the ties to the Avalanch. He did not look like a happy man. I assmue if he coveted MacKinnon he wouldn't be nearly as disappointed.

Colorado's probably wishing a bit that they didn't get first overall and drafted second. Had Florida won, I'm betting they would have taken McKinnon first, and then Colorado would have had to take Jones. Now, if this ever turns out where McKinnon becomes a franchise forward and Jones turns into a Johnson type dman, their fanbase will always wonder what could have been.

it seems pretty clear that the difference in elite talent between prospects 1 thru 3 is minimal. it could be debated this could be said for 1 thru 4 if you include Barkov in the same convo as mackinnon/jones/drouin.
i know people hate cheering for losses, but man I was pissed when we were winning those games in the end, and now when the draft depth may be deeper than just the top 2 or 3 (which has beenn the case for the past couple of seasons), it's even more sad.
sorry for the rant, no need to bash the above sentiment, i don't care to debate this opinion .
taking off ur flames goggles for a second, and forgetting holes in our prospect pool, if u were an expansion franchise, which player would u select 1st to start ur franchise around? i think i would pick mackinnon based on his skill level + the position he plays being the hardest to fill in the NHL.
I think the avs will end up taking mackinnon and trading stastny for d help.

If they draft MacKinnon I could see them dealing both ROR and Stastny for D help + a Brandon Sutter type 3rd line center.

If Colorado takes Mckinnon, it's just not fair. They would have Duchene, Mckinnon, and O'Reilly down the middle, and Landeskog on the wing.

Anthony Mantha is 6'4 and scored 50 goals in 69 games in the QMJHL as an 18 year old. Why is he rated 20-30 instead of top 10? I think Calgary should take a shot and draft him with the St. Louis pick.
