The 22nd pick is usually better than the #6 pick
The 21st picks suck!
2008 #22 pick Jordan Ebrle #6 Nikita Filatov 21st pick Anton Gustafsson
2007 #22 pick Max Pacioretty #6 Sam Gagner #21 Riley Nash
2006 #22 pick Claude Giroux #6 Derrek Brassard #21 Bob Sanguinetti

Trying to narrow down who might be available at our STL pick (looking like 21) is mostly guesswork but I'll throw some guesses out there.
Definitely Gone
-----------------
MacKinnon, Jones, Drouin, Barkov, Nichushkin, Lindholm, Monahan, Nurse, Zadorov = 9
Probably Gone
----------------
Domi, Ristolainen, Horvat, Shinkaruk, Wennberg, Morin = 6
So that is 15 guys.
That leaves the following guys, 5 of whom will also be gone by 21
Bigras
Bowey
Burakowsky
Compher
Dickinson
Dauphin
Duclair
Erne
Gauthier
Hartman
Heatherington
Hagg
Klimchuk
Lekhonen
Mantha
McCoshen
McCarron
Morrisey
Mueller
Petan
Pulock
Rychel
Santini
Zykov

Morin is kind of a strange. It seems he is ranked anywhere from 12th - 36th. I would put him in the later catagory. And I think he would be a steal with the Pit pick. But I don't see why you would stretch for him just because of his size.

Big d-men with skating don't usually last long. And many teams have reached for them in the past (Valabik, Mezei, Kudroc, Wishart, etc.)
In my time of following the draft over the past 15 years I'd say d-men with size usually go a bit higher than expected, so do top line centres, and sometimes goalies do as well.
Morin had such a great end to the year and has such big potential that I see someone stepping up sooner rather than later to take him.
D-men went super high last year, most of the top 10 was d-men. I don't see guys like Nurse, Zadorov, Morin and Ristolainen falling outside the top 20 although I'd love if one of them was available for the STL pick. Fans and some media tend to get fixated on forwards because scoring is sexy but make no mistake about the fact that scouts will be falling in love with the d-men too.

There will be some surprisingly talented smaller guy(s) (Domi 5-9) that will fall and be available to the Flames at the end of the first round.
Other teams will be wary of wasting their 1st round pick (and their best chance for a successful draft on a player that will be an obvious underdog on making to the NHL) as would the Flames if they only had one pick.
Even then it would not be surprising for the Flames to pass on a smaller talented guy to go for Jankowski 2.0 as Gaudreau is already Baertschi v2.0
In 2011 draft there was only 2 players under 6 feet drafted in the 1st round
Ryan Murphy at 5'11 and Baertschi at 5'10.
If Baertschi would have been 6' he would have been picked a 4-5 picks earlier.
In the 2012 draft 2 players in the first round under 6'.... Yakapov at 5'11 and Teuvo Teravainen 5'10 by Chi at #18

The guys I'd be happy with bolded. I would be tickled if we could snap up both Gauthier and Mantha with our other two picks. Lindholm, Gauthier and Mantha would be sweet as a first round.

Man. I really wish we had our second rounder. #36 would get us a decent prospect
Sucks that we have the same number of picks in the first 60 as the oilers. Obviously our picks are more valuable.

When is the last time the Oilers made a really good pick outside of the 1st round? Their scouting is more abysmal than the Flames by a long shot.

When was the last time they had a good pick outside of 1st overall? Klefbom is the only one I recall, and he is still a TBD.

Yeah but he was still a 1st rounder. I'm talking outside of the 1st round. Last year they butchered the 31st pick on Moroz a grinder who would have been around in the 3rd round or later. Their scouting staff stinks.

My hopes are for Zykov and Rychel in that list, then maybe start focusing on D. We do already have some decent young D-men in Brodie, Breen, Ramage, Wotherspoon, and Sieloff and we lack actual foward prospects who will definately make it to the NHL and show pure skill. Yes, we have Gaudreau, but he is fairly small and it's not a lock for him to make it. Outside of Sven, there isn't much past that and some guys like Jankowski are very far away and isn't a lock either. Just my opinion.

Monahan/Lindholm, Rychel and Mantha would be a damn fine 1st round.

Very much agreed. However, I for some strange reason prefer Zykov- The kid won rookie of the year in the Q. Is 6'1 and 215 already and can score ! I keep reading that while Mantha is a pure goal scorer as well, he can dissapear alot and can be lazy and uninvolved a lot of times- that kinda scares me. What do you know about Mantha that might make him the better choice over Zykov ? cause most things I have seen/ read about him make me leary of him.

Mantha has all the tools. Size, skating and goal scoring talent. Yeah I've read he's lacks drive and can look uninvolved but IMO you can look at that as a red flag or simply a young man that hasn't matured yet. I would like to think that you don't score 50 goals in any junior league without being pretty competitive. If he's coachable he could be a steal in this draft like Perry was in 03.
