Phaneuf: Started his career in Calgary, close to home, hated the media. Gets punished by being traded to Toronto where there couldn't be more media coverage.

Richards: Started his career in Florida, wins cup. Goes to Dallas, nice situation. Goes back to a contender in the NYR. Do other contenders want him? Or is he at a point where he must prove himself. At the same time SJ took Gomez so I think he'll go to a contender, but as Flames fans we better hope he gets shut down. Then we could at least see if he can get it going with Baertschi, if not we trade him for a 1st rounder.
I'm sorry, I'm tired. What "trend" are you trying to point out here?

It's no secret that it's next to impossible to aquire a top notch centerman these days. Age 33 or not, you do it if you can. This team sorely lacks quality depth at center. Now, I got no clue about what is going on with him and Torts in the playoffs this year, but, Richards has proven in the past that he is a winner and you can't just bypass him because of the present drama. If my GM didn't even attempt to aquire him, I would fire his a$$.

IMO Richards signed in New York to get big money and be in the Big City.

I think if he gets bought out money is no longer the issue, which means he will go somewhere that will bring him a cup or bring him a social life like New York.

Neither of these things scream Calgary to me.

Maybe the Flames can move his family from the east coast out west so they can see him play. Seemed to be a big driving force in him going back east and why Calgary is probably one of the last franchises he would go to.

I wouldn't either worry about Richards being bought out and going to Calgary or wanting to come to Calgary.

Richards is not going to be bought out. The Rangers will give him at least 1 or 2 more seasons.

With zero cost to acquire I would say if he is willing to come here I don't care if the Flames offered big money if the term was 1-2 years. I just don't see Richards coming back west or coming to a rebuilding team. The Feaster factor may play a role but I doubt it.

I want to think since Feaster said no post apex players that Richards won't be an option but Jay has said one thing and done another in the past so I don't put much stock into his words

The only trend is nobody here knows what trend you're talking about.

Don't see how signing Richards helps the Flames obtain another high draft pick or two. What would be the point? One draft won't turn this team around so we might as well see what we have on the team rather than bring in aging veterans.

One year deal maybe, only to flip him at the deadline. Perhaps him and Cammalleri have some chemistry and both can be flipped for high draft picks.

Of course what you are saying is true, and I'm sure the OP knows that Richards would also have to agree, and it's far from likely he would (the guy isn't even bought out yet).

I think the OP was trying to start an interesting debate in regards to what type of moves would you be willing to see the Flames make, by picking an older player, who could fill a role the Flames desperately need. Would the fans be in favour of this, or would they prefer not to address needs if it requires a veteran player to do it. I'd say the OP was successful in sparking some reasonable discussion.

It would help the Flames cause we suck at center and lack depth. Richards also has won a cup and won MVP during the playoffs that year. He brings experience, a winning background, and who knows- some leadership ? You can't just have a bunch of kids running around out there ala the Oilers. Bringing in a high profile centerman who has won a cup and has tasted success is not a bad thing and is a great thing to have rub off on your younger players coming up. Also, he would of led our team in scoring.

This isn't about needing to tank for better draft picks who may or may not work out. I like to see my team win and slowly build the smart way while still competing.

Yes I would. Good veteran leader along with Cammy and Glencross.
And to think we traded the pick to Tampa Bay that got him

I think that there will still be teams lined up in order to get Richards, especially at a discounted price given his recent performances. Both teams in Alberta, Columbus, Dallas, Florida, Minnesota, Montreal, Nashville, New York Islanders, Phoenix, Toronto, Washington and Winnipeg are in need of center depth and Richards is still a solid #2 center who has a good track record.

Not a chance... He's not likely to be a factor once the Flames are relevant again, so I wouldn't bother.

I don't think he gets bought out, but if he does, I see him in TOR or MTL

Torts is more likely on his way out than Richards anyways. Very unlikely to get bought out

That makes him more likely to get bought out, imo. A new GM can spin it as the last GM's terrible mistake. If he does it, he has to explain why it was a good idea very recently, but now is such a big mistake it's worth paying tens of millions of dollars to get out of it.

You missed Rafalski: Spent a good chunk of his early career in Europe despite being an American. Signed with the Devils to play in the NHL, won the Cup and made his way to his home team the Detroit Red Wings.
