I don't think that is the case for compliance buyouts

Not if they have a NMC. They can agree to first be put on waivers (which is what Drury must've done) but it's ultimately their choice:

A no-move clause may prevent the involuntary relocation of a Player, whether by Trade, Loan or Waiver claim. A no-move clause, however, may not restrict the Club's buy-out and termination rights as set forth in this Agreement. Prior to exercising its Ordinary Course Buy-Out rights pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC hereof, the Club shall, in writing in accordance with the notice provisions in Exhibit 3 hereof, provide the Player with the option of electing to be placed on Waivers. The Player will have twenty-four (24) hours from the time he receives such notice to accept or reject that option at his sole discretion, and shall so inform the Club in writing, in accordance with the notice provisions in Exhibit 3 hereof, within such twenty-four (24) hour period. If the Player does not timely accept or reject that option, it will be deemed rejected.

Because Feaster pulled the deal at the trade deadline and St. L thought they would be playing for the SC with the Bouw. Short term gain for long term pain.
If St.L runs up against their internal cap and has to dump the Bouw not getting back a 1st rounder or any prospects.
Philly wanted Bouw ................................ FOR Briere. and now Briere has no value to them at all.

It's been acknowledged by Ed Snider himself that he ordered Holmgren to go get Bryz. It's not exactly his fault...

I do believe that Snider was a driving force but you would hope the GM would be able to talk him out of a bad deal.

Briere and Richards for a combined $8M/year for 3 years each would be good for the young guys, and would be good for a stop gap 2nd line. Briere's still a big game player.

I bet Briere stays far away from a rebuilding team in the west.
I see him signing in Florida, New Jersey, Toronto, Ottawa, etc. Don't count Detroit out either.

Briere would be a good addition for a team like the Islanders. Veteran guy who could add some extra leadership.

The truth is that EVERY team could make use of a guy like Briere. But I guess it comes down to his family situation out east. Wouldn't be surprised to see a team like Boston make a run for him. He fits their mould of player that would fit right in (concussion prone, speedy, stocky) .

Is this official?
TSN had Briere on the panel yesterday, and it was treated as a rumour

To small and not a good fit here in Calgary I can see him staying in the East.

Briere would be a nice add for a playoff contending team, (seems he has an extra level in the playoffs) but his regular season production lacks a bit lately.
That said, i'd sign him short term then trade him at the trade deadline

If he came cheap I would mind a 1 year deal.
Basically it gives Briere top 6 time (most likely 1st line) to do a coupel things:
- increase his trade value
- increase his offseason value the year after for a better contract

If Cammalleri is traded, I wouldn't mind Briere on a cheap, 1-2 year contract as a stop-gap top6 forward

If the Flames had a larger team then i would say yes Briere would be a good addition but regardless not at anywhere near his current money.
The Flames were pushed around enough as it is, he would be a better fit on a more balanced team. Flames need to beef up the roster with size, skill and strength.

I don't think it was considered a very bad deal at the time...
