In what world is a pair of 91-point seasons and a career scoring average over .90 "underwhelming"? There are reasons to say "I don't want Brad Richards" that don't require making crap up.

Edit: Just realized I misread your post. I thought you said he had been "underwhelming at best in his career". However, .75ppg this year, and .8ppg last year isn't something to sneeze at. Not worth the contract the Rangers gave him (or the Flames offered), however.

That being said, and his dismal playoff performance notwithstanding, $3 million per year on a short term contract for a centre who outscored every Flames player this year? That's a bargain, and one Feaster should chase down. Signing decent point producers to good deals does not hamper the ability to build up the core of youth. Especially when we have no centres to speak of at this time.

However, I don't think Richards would go that cheap, nor do I think he'd want to go to a rebuilding team. He will try to get on with a contender.

NO. Put a defensively responsible guy in that position. Teach the youngsters to play a solid two way game as a base for further development.

My point is that the Flames should not be going after UFA post-apex players to fill top minutes and to be the go to guys. Let the up and coming pre-apex players fill those minutes and give them something to prove.

Who are these players you speak of? Especially at the centre position? I'm right there with you, if we had some reasonable pre-apex players to fill the minutes in question.

No, we'll just suck more when Backlund is injured.

It's time to give Backlund some room to grow, you risk the injuries.

Where is this 3 mill a year coming from? Just made up? He will get much more on the open market. Is he worth more? Maybe not, but he will get it, unless he takes a cut to goto a contender. That said, 3 mill for 3 years is a no brainer.

I think a few things are important:

#1) We have to sign some free agents to put together an NHL roster
#2) We should probably go into the season with more than 1 centre this time.

Is that line-up over the cap floor? What if Kipper retires?

It would be nice to be comfortably over the cap floor so we have more flexibility to move players for picks/prospects.

I think it kind of depends how the draft goes. If we some how get Barkov then we go into camp with Backlund, Stajan, and Barkov as our top three centers. Barkov could slide in as the 2nd or 3rd line center and as he progresses move him up.

If we land Monahan or Lindholm do either of them even make the team out of camp? I think both would be better off playing one more year developing. So if we get Monahan or Lindholm I think we should definitely give Richards a look on a short deal so we have some legit centers and an asset that could be moved at the deadline.

Of course you sign him - the Flames have the worst C depth in the NHL.

And after getting 1st line minutes, he is an excellent trade deadline candidate - either this year or next.

Looks like it would be right at the cap floor depending on what some RFA's sign for if Kipper retires. With Kipper that looks to be around 48/9 million dollars.

I'd sign and try to flip him at deadline next year or the year after that.

Thst said, I don't think he can be had for 3M. Maybe try to give him 4.5 for two years (as was suggested earlier).

Might as well invite Lecavalier and St. Louis since this seems to be the happening spot for 04 Lightning members. Heck we already have their GM.

I can't believe the overwhelming hate for Richards around here? Colour me shocked actually. I think this board is under estimating how well the guy reads the game even at his age. With Tortorella as the coach in NY, I really wonder if there is a conflict behind the scenes which we're seeing now come to the surface. Richards hasn't played badly enough to warrant sitting out in such an important game. Even at $4M/ season I'd take the guy for 3 years in a heartbeat. His vision and how he reads the game could definitely help a young stud.
