It can't possibly be true that the Stamps or Flames employees have an inside scoop to things going on around the team.

And the local media is just too stupid to pick up on those? Sorry, but anything with any basis would be in the media. Water cooler rumors are just that.

Not trying to be facetious, but I am curious because as far as I know, you don't have the same inside sources to the Calgary business community that some other CP'ers do. Or are you involved with some of the talks or have heard different rumors?

I am assuming the lack of a response to your question to Valo is no, and that he has no inside sources to the Calgary business community. However, he feels the need to "piss" on someone's anecdotal evidence because Calgary Metro hasn't picked up the story yet.

I don't have any sources, and I've never said it won't happen, I just think it would be phenomenally stupid for a number of reasons and don't have any appetite for seeing taxpayer money thrown at it. There have been a few reasons mentioned that may change that (U of C wanting to use that land in another way, or being unwilling to participate in a renovation, the possibility of a JV with the Stampede spreading costs), but overall I see a stadium that would be right on par with comparable venues following a renovation. The ability to generate additional revenue seems to be minimal, and the cost of a new stadium would be substantial. If private money wants to do it then more power to them, I'd be happy to see it done and I imagine they'd spend the money to figure out if it was viable, so maybe I missed the mark with my assessment. If it takes public money to make it work then, thanks but no thanks.
I don't think some college kid working the ticket office phone line is privy to anything more than the rest of us, and if anything with any real basis was being leaked to that guy I'm pretty confident it would be in the media. Like I said, this is a huge story, it's not very likely it's staying quiet if there's anything to report.

Yep that's it, or I was typing a response that actually involved some thought and took more than 30 seconds.

Valo, you should totally be behind any new stadium. You don't live here, so there's no risk of having to pay for it in any way tax wise, yet can utilize the facilities when you visit! It's pretty win-win. You should be pro every pie in the sky idea Calgary has.

I don't live there, but my entire family does so I'm not exactly completely removed. I also don't live in NJ, but I still know that Xanadu was one of the stupidest things ever built, and that it screwed over NJ taxpayers (my tone may be different if that indoor ski hill was operational ).

Using whether something has or has not been in the media as a gauge for legitimacy I would strongly question.
The media gets things wrong all the time, and most of what they write is purely based on what a press release says. Then they screw that up and print it.
I'm not saying whether or not there is any truth to it or not, just that using the fact that it hasn't appeared in some mainstream media has any relevance or reliability.

A stadium though, one that would be of great significance to this city, would be very difficult to keep under wraps though.

A new CFL stadium, would that really be one of significance? There is no chance IMO that a project is underway to create a world class Outdoor or Dome stadium, it just doesn't make sense for Calgary. But a new CFL stadium to house the Stampeders and that could also be used for some form of soccer, that could likely be kept under wraps.
The crown jewel for Calgary of this project will be the new Arena, it will be the main focus of any sportsplex project because that is what this city needs. It may get coupled with a new stadium for the Stamps, but that will be a CFL stadium and not something earth shattering.

Just in case people are interested, here's how Winnipeg's new stadium is coming along. It may not be "world-class", but I think something of this nature would be a pretty great, and realistic, upgrade for McMahon. The overhang over the seating areas, as well as actual seat-backs, would be welcome by most fans I'm sure.

That sadium is a perfect CFL building, tight seating to the field. I could do without the covers as I like sunny McMahon. But that will be the new noisiest stadium in the leauge, similar to a mini Seattle. I think the total came out to be 200M's. Ken King is talking about 100 M just to upgrade McMahon.

Stamps held an preseason conference call this morning. Had a tidbid on changes to McMahon:
Scott Mitchell@SUNMitchell2m
Stamps prez Gord Norrie says some changes are in store for McMahon this season. Some new seats and hopefully more concessions #calstampeders
Scott Mitchell@SUNMitchell16s
Norrie also mentioned the potential for more washrooms and VIP/season-ticket holder "viewing stations" at McMahon #calstampeders #cfl

$100 million to upgrade McMahon could make a stadium every bit as nice as that.

This is the type of project Calgary should be considering. Anything larger or more grandios would be a total waste of cash.

A couple more:
Scott Mitchell@SUNMitchell4m
Half of aluminum seats at McMahon will be covered up by "customized inserts," president Gord Norrie says. #calstampeders #cfl
Scott Mitchell@SUNMitchell3m
Norrie says he has "commissioned drawings" for the changes to washrooms, concessions, etc. We'll see how fast they can get that implemented

And I believe something like that would still be difficult to keep a secret from the media. It doesn't have to look world class, but still can be a nicely done venue that would get high praise from the local and national audience.

Fair enough, but how secretive in the media is it? We are speculating about it on here, and so is some of the media. RM just wrote an article about it.
