I was thinking that 2 compliance buyout candidates are Richards and Lecavilier. I could see Featser making pitches to both if they are available

Well since you mentioned it, I actually thought all 3 of those (almost/) transactions were a bad deal... but that wasn't my point. The point was hindsight would show the foresight to see a 12 year mega-deal would be a bad idea to a 31 year old, just speaking about the Richards fiasco on its own.

Never was the same once Olivia Munn dumped him. Poor Brad.

Brad Richards - healthy scratch in playoff eliminating game, about to be bought out of a 12 year contract
Ryan Smyth - junk
2nd round pick - ???
Butler - we all know
Byron - in fairness to him, injured last year
In a league of only 30 GM positions, you have to think there's got to be a better GM candidate out there.

Even with an older Regehr we would have made the playoffs 2 years ago. Can't believe we can field such a soft team in the NHL.

If we were still the team having Iginla on RW and Cammy on LW centered by Richards, then yes I would sign him. But we aren't that team anymore, we are heading in a different direction. I don't think Richards would offer us anything except in the form of mentorship for some of the younger guys. And that can be had at a cheaper rate than 3 mill a year.

What top 6 center for mentoring is going to come cheaper than $3 million? Even Stajan will probably get $2.5 million when he hits UFA in 2014.

This. Do people actually think that you can get a top 6 center with enough experience to take on a mentoring role for less than $3mil?

Given the cap space and lack of C depth, I would absolutely make that offer (or a 2 year deal, even better). Would Richards ever accept that from Calgary?

You'd be stupid not to. Look what we paid for Cervenka. At least Richards is a proven NHL player. 3 years/ 3 mil per year seems very low risk/high reward to me.

I'd rather have Jokinen back for that price. His offense is totally gone but we totally missed him and his defensive play last year. He should be our new Stephane Yelle.

Have to take advantage of the cap space we have. Richards is a perfect target to buy low on. He's been terrible in these playoffs, but he is obviously a top-6 centre, which is currently an organizational weakness. I'd offer him 1 year at 7 million or 2 years at 5.

You would rather Olli over Richards? I was pretty much one of the lone Olli suporters, but even i would not chose Olli over Richards.

If he didn't want to sign for the same term and dollars why would he want to come to Calgary now ?
Yes he is severely overpaid, but he will go elsewhere in the East if the Rangers buy him out.

Not that I think he would be willing to sign here but absolutely yes for a smaller price tag like that on a 2-3 year deal. While I'm very strongly opposed to handing out big paydays to FA's as it is a silly move in general, especially one for a team in rebuild. But getting a decent centerman for a relatively low cap hit for a couple of years to mentor the young guys while giving up NO ASSETS to get him? Of course, silly not to.
That said I can't see what interest he would have in signing here.

Does anyone really care how much actual money Murray Edwards spends? The cap hit was $3.75 which is what really mattered.

The Flames didn't spend to the cap anyway, so no, the cap hit isn't a factor at all.
They may have spent a bit more, if there was anyone else available to spend more money on.
