There really is going to be little reason to actually purchase a disk anymore.

If the only thing that disk is used for is the initial install files then you might just as well download the game and save the trip to the store.

This is simply pushing people to the Steam model. I'm sure they see how many people are purchasing older titles and the control over pricing. MS and EA are probably salivating at the opportunity to do that for consoles. Plus they can get rid of the resale market like many publishers have been trying to do for years. If people don't really need disks then the publishers don't really need B&M retailers which is a larger chunk for them.

While there are some benefits to consumers (similar to Steam) I think there is a solid chunk of downside for the consumer too.

If there is no secondary market and more people would by the games outright, the prices will go down?

Not if Microsoft/EA have anything to say about it.

Why the bloody f*** do I have to have a Kinect? It's going to cost me $100+ extra to buy the system because this POS is included in it and then I'll never EVER use it. I can't sell it either because everyone has one. I'm a lazy SOB, but I'm no where near the levels of lazy where I will use the Kinect voice commands to switch menus, its just stupid.

But of course game companies are going to make a ton of voice commands and motion controls for their games so I have to use the Kinect. I've hated the Kinect since day one and nothing here changes that.

i would assume for games that i play (mainly sports) any kinect integration can be managed thru the controller also (madden audibles can be done thru voice or thru controller).

I agree, it would be annoying to do this thru voice.

If only there was some sort of comparable competitor not forcing you to do something so foolish...

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/mi...s-sort-of-wei/

Their intention from the first Xbox was to own the living room, and the evolution of the 360 showed this trajectory in motion. The Xbox One is them realizing this vision. The problem is, they're leaving core gamers behind. You would've thought that the reaction to their E3 2012 press conference would've been a wake up call, but they're on a different course. They see more money in general entertainment, media and ads than core gamers. They see dollar signs with subscription fees. They want the revenue stream that cable providers and phone carriers have been enjoying.

What a giant load of **** that was! All buzzwords! They talked for an hour and basically said nothing. What does 'always ready' mean?"

"A solution" eh? This is the internet . . . I await for this to be Godwin'd.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...-a-fee-to-play

Our man on the ground Tom Bramwell was able to speak to corporate vice president of Microsoft Phil Harrison about this hot-button issue and was able to confirm that a second user can install a game from a friend's disc for a fee, though it's unclear how much this will be. Harrison also confirmed that several users sharing a console can access the same game at no additional charge, and Microsoft has "a solution" for the resale market, though it's staying mum on those for now.

Doesn't really mean much but interesting to see how the stock reacted post XBox announcement.

Microsoft: $34.85: -$0.23 (-0.66%)
Sony: $22.91: +$1.94 (9.25%)
Nintendo: $13.99: +$0.35 (2.57%)

Rumors that Sony may be splitting the company into two divisions also impacted their stock (Entertainment/Electronics). However not a good sign for Microsoft to have their stock go down on such a large announcement while both major competitors saw increases.

Sorry for all the posts but I guess things are coming into focus:

http://kotaku.com/you-will-be-able-t...cros-509140825

Other users on the console will be able to play that game as well, Harrison said. So you don't need to buy multiple games per family.

"It sits on your harddrive and you have permission to play that game as long as you’d like," Harrison said.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live." "They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked. "Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.

This is interesting though, their own used game store? Or rather, "second-hand" rights store.

"We will have a solution—we’re not talking about it today—for you to be able to trade your previously-played games online," Harrison said.

The game trading thing through XBOX live is neat if true.

Uh, I'll look at it in 2015 when all 3 new consoles are out and it's clear which one is the better console (or when I actually start gaming again). It just seems like another gadget to watch Netflix on.

I will not lie, the online trading of games sounds pretty neat.

I'm not sure what to think about the 2nd hand games issue. In the end I want to be able to sell games that I don't play and buy games that I don't want to play right away for cheap or borrow for free. If I can do that, fine. If not, buh-bye MS.

Also, the used game market was originally my workaround plan for not giving a single cent of my money to EA while playing their games, looks like I may have to just outright boycott them now.

LOL - Jesus Christ.

http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-does-requ...ay-o-509164109

Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?

Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.

Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.

Harrison: Correct.

I read that it'll have an HDMI passthrough, so you'd be able to use whatever TV source you wanted. One would hope it would have an IR blaster that you could add on as well so you can control your source and use the One's guides and all the other nifty features.

EDIT: Oh and the looks of it I think are hard to judge, it looks like it's actually smaller than it appears, think of two Nintendo Wii's side by side, a little wider and taller.

Hmmm I can't see them doing anything less than retail (or just barely lower). $20 is more than enough for people to just swap disks for a day just for installation. Heck, $10 is probably enough for people to care to do it.

Microsoft suggests that a “historic” Rare property may be shown off at E3. Speaking to Polygon, Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer said “fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we're going to show at E3. We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability. That historic IP that they've built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One."

Well looks like Microsoft made it very easy for me. PS4 it is; better faster memory less of which is used up by having three different tasks running in the background, having the ability to sell my games, not having to log in once per day to play my games.

I mean what happens when the activation servers get turned off 10 years from now and I still want to play those games?
