And I have a history of hating Iran, what's your point? Hating Israel doesn't mean I hate Jews.

Like I said, your reading comprehension needs a little tuning.

Nah, I am done with you.

You will bluster away, and hey have fun. I am still laughing about your knowledge of Rob Ford.

According to the study posted by the OP, there are 850,000 child brides in Iran.

So, not "rarely."

Worldwide, according to the National Geographic link I posted earlier, there are about 14.5 million new child brides every year in the world.

Yeah, it's Sharia Law I'm trying to justify.

Actually it's the broad brush vilification of a whole population that I object to.

There was an Afgani movie that came out in 2003 called "Osama" that really puts this problem in perspective and humanizes what this actually meant for a woman living under the Taliban. I highly recommend it:

Essentially its about a 12 year old girl who tries to disguise herself as a boy to avoid abuse. Of course its a movie but all the actors are amateurs and the main character was found on the streets of Kabul.

There are several sects of Christianity that have extremely messed up cultural traditions. Polygamy is a good example.

So Mormon/Utah/American cultures should be wiped off the map?

Yup, Iran has some messed up people. Yup, there are messed up Muslims. If you think the majority of Muslims/Iranians are down for coppulating with children, you're wrong.

The current Iranian government is messed up. There are many Iranians who have risked their lives protesting for change.

Polygamy is illegal in Utah. The government of Iran is legalizing sex and marriage with 9 year olds...that's the difference.

No one is disputing that religions of all types can result in backward craziness. The issue is how much the government bends to or, in this case, encourages those crazies.

Except that in the US the people have a say in their government, so you can consider the "no polygamy" law a representation of the people.

In Iran, the government is staffed with religious stooges, umbrella'd under the Ayatollah. The people did not introduce, lobby for, or promote this law.

Even a religious dictatorship can't get away with 850,000 child brides in its midsts, backed by law, without some general acceptance by the population.

In one country the nut jobs are rellegated to rural areas. In the other they siezed power and are in the government.

The people living under that government are very unfortunate, and hopefully things change. It's not a reason to "wipe them out".

Sorry, must have missed that part of the thread where people were advocating genocide of the Iranian people. People discussed ending cultural practices only. You do realize what quotation marks are for? Exact quotes.

Someone editted a quoted post on page one to say:

"you know, some cultures aren't worth preserving and need to be wiped from the face of the earth."

This website and it's moral high ground when it comes to criticizing other cultures is absolutely ridiculous. Everyone is A-OK with jumping on an individual but the moment you group said individuals into one sect of society, you're a bad person?

This is ****ed up. Regardless. Anyone who supports this should be wiped off the face of the earth. Are you ****ing kidding? I can't believe this is up for discussion.

That was me.

If your society/culture or sub-sect supports this, then yeah I am fine with wiping them from the face of the earth.

Well, looking at wikipedia, Iran has a population of about 77.5 million people. Assuming thats accurate and the 850,000 'child bride figure' is factual, this works out to about 1% of the Iranian population.

So, a fairly insignificant outlier. I find it odd that any government would find it sensible to make policy that applies to such an insignificant number of people.
