The authorities did an amazing job of controlling information following the Boston Marathon bombing. It's getting much better than it used to be and will continue to improve.

But you hit the nail on the head with the reporters. They are accountable to no-one during crises such as this. 200 dead draws more eyeballs than 20 and that's ALL they care about.

it is because they now all have to take the NIMS training. But it is still much better in the bigger more populated areas like the east coast...it's getting better here. It gets immeasurably better as soon as the armed forces get permission to come to the scene.

It's not an easy situation to control to be sure. I wasn't intending to slam the efforts of law enforcement and first responders, just that on the list of things to do, establishing clear communication channels goes out the window when it is their community that is hit. They do a hell of a job.

Well anytime the body count goes down that is a good thing.

I was having trouble comprehending the size of this thing, so I hacked together an overlap with the tornado path and north Calgary.. Absolutly mind numbing. Kick me if I complain about our weather anytime soon...

Agree 100%. I was more trying to call attention to the improvement seen in recent times.

Think of the explosion in West, TX. They did a good job there.

I think that you are an order of magnitude different with the level of widespread devastation in Oklahoma.

This keeps getting worse and worse. A high school classmate lost her daughter in the school. Another High school classmate ( that I used to used to drive to school) lost her and her son's life. This is how lucky I got...

I`m beyond words... Very sad to hear about the loss of life around you, especially children. Thank you for keeping us updated, as I think it important for people all over the world to recognize how fragile life is.

I`ll assume the best way for people in Calgary to help is with a donation to www.redcross.org?

Yeah red cross is the big one. My team the OKC gladiators are taking paypal donations to help our teammates who lost everything. One is expecting his first baby any day now. We also will use funds to buy walmart gift cards to give to families in need. If you want to donate there so you can guarantee it goes directly to the tornado victims , oklahomagladiators@yahoo.com is the paypal addy. RedCross is good though, I think Salvation Army too.

Finally a small feel good story. Im a dog lover so if you are too you'll like this. Im not sure if Im just full of emotion but this made me ... well frk... it made me cry.

My friend from OKC is fine, she wasn't in any danger living downtown and working North of OKC. No one she knows died in the tornado but a few lost their homes.

I told her not to expect me to visit in May anytime soon!

Can Canadians donate to redcross.org? I noticed that Red Cross Canada said they're not supporting Oklahoma at this time.

Small world!

So do these people that lost their homes have insurance coverage for it? I couldn't imagine tornado insurance being cheap in "tornado alley".

I'm not really sure to be honest.. Just kind of going off info I get. Thanks to anonymous donation I just got from CP on Paypal. I am about to leave to take bottled water , food, and dog food down to the command center. A lot of people hungry , thirsty , as well as the displaced dogs.

We have insurance. I would imagine everyone here most likely does. Remember a lot of these people have lost their homes 2 times now sometimes 3. I would hope they had it.

What's the cost like on that coverage? Is it around 25% of your home insurance premium?

I'm guessing it's not included in regular home insurance and like us with earthquake insurance has to be bought separate?

(curious as an insurance person)

I just had another friend that tried from up here and wasn't able to. She's going to donate via that other link someone posted here and barring that, she'll just mail a cheque down to the Red Cross.
