Do the Flames players under contract at the time get sent to other clubs via a dispersal draft while the club takes a 3-4 year hiatus for the arena to be built?

I would imagine the Flames would just play out of the corral. Unless they need to demolish that too, as part of the new complex. In that case they could just play out of Max Bell Arena. They just renovated, too, so that would be a selling point for the players.

I took it he meant that the football stadium would be built where the Saddledome is. The new arena would already be built before the Dome was razed.

I think ideally you have a stadium with covered seating areas (but not the field itself) so at least you get sheltered a bit from the elements but can still enjoy the sun, and a heated indoor concourse where you can warm up if need be. Of course it would be great if we could get a retractable dome, but that's probably not feasible.

New rink would probably be part of that announcement I would imagine.

Just because it was a few days ago and in the midst of another CP dance fight...i thought I would bump this up. It's just Roger passing on a topic he had heard rumblings on and he thought might have some legs.
Kind of goes with what a couple of you have been throwing out there.

I doubt the Saddledome is going anywhere, anytime soon. It's owned by the City of Calgary, and nobody's going to want to be the city council that authorized the demolition of a building that iconic.

Nobody's going to want to be on the ownership group that is paying to operate an aging facility with no main tenant and that also can't attract concerts and events because they will be at the new facility.
The only thing I can see is if the Saddledome were to be re-purposed in an innovative way that also minimizes input operations costs or offsets them with revenue.
EDIT: Actual ownership of Saddledome addressed by others above.

Not that I don't believe that some have mused about a 2022 bid, but I would have to think that the chances of winning another Olympics in Canada a mere 12 years after Vancouver hosted would be next to none. Especially with Toronto wanting to host a summer Olympics.
People might bring up that Montreal and Calgary were separated by 12 years (and also Atlanta and Salt Lake City by 6 years), but this is a different era where cities in Asia, Africa, Middle East and South America are in real contention for the Games and the IOC has shown a strong desire to spread it around a lot more.

Huh? Everything I can find ( example) points to the city as the owner, and I've also heard it from someone who should know about such things.

^Yeah, it's managed by an arm's length group, not City Council. The Saddledome Foundation, although having Alderman Ray "The Potted Plant in Council Chambers Speaks up More Often" Jones on it would have a much larger influence on what to do with the 'Dome.
City owns, Council doesn't directly decide. I should have said "ownership/management situation."

Sure, but does the Saddledome Foundation have the ability to demolish the building within their lease terms? Perhaps they do, but I'd doubt it.

Why would we want an unused building to just sit there on the Stampede grounds? Because of nostalgia?
This is Calgary, we level historic buildings that can be repurprosed without a second though. The Saddledome would die immediately.

What is the point of keeping this arena stuff secret? I truly don't get it, unless they're not done the plans, in which case the dropped rumours and hints about an announcement coming are annoying.
Set an announcement date, and leave it at that, and if you're not ready, stop acting like a schoolyard little girl running around with "the secret" that you just 'can't wait to tell everyone' about.

To be fair to the Flames, I can't recall any time recently where King discussed the arena plans when it wasn't in response to being asked about it. He always mentions it at the start of the STH meetings, but only to say that there hasn't been any progress since the last meeting.
The reason it sounds like they just keep saying the same thing with no progress is because they are saying the same thing with no progress.
This thread was started because Ron MacLean said something on HNIC, not because of anything anyone on the Flames said.

Anyone think it's plausible that they bulldoze the big 4 building and build both a stadium and arena in the area between the convention center and the grandstands? You have 2 train stations to service the facility and could probably incorporate an expansion of the convention center into it as well. Then the Dome and the Corral get bulldozed for parking and the entire stampede grounds shift North to land they have bought up.
I know it would be a tight fit, but I just think it has to be downtown and has to be on the train line. I also believe that building a massive facility like this would increase the chances of it being used more often.
