So after approx 1 1/2 years of minor- medium pain and constant discomfort I' ve finally made a Dr's appt for my stupid knees. What can I expect to hear from the Doc?
I have two problems, my left knee buckled on me while curling two winters ago and did get better for a while it has really been a problem for me for the last 6 months again, my original online research suggested sprained MCL, but lately it snaps pops and grinds whenever I move it, feel like there's no cartilage in there, the pain is primarily in the back of my knee right, and has extended to my upper calf. It has been swollen for quite some time to.
In both knees, I have pain in the front, right above the knee caps, and is the worst when sitting, whenever there is impact, or squatting, can't run or even jog, up/ down stairs is a struggle, and getting of and off the toilet really hurts them as well. Of course we all need our knees but, my job and lifestyle really become my problem. My job requires lots of driving, squatting and climbing, which are all a problem for me right now and as for my my hobbies, tennis, and slow pitch are out for this year, running is not even possible, like I can't even jog across the street, yard work is totally, aside from running the lawn mower. I have also gained 12Lbs so far in 2013,primarily due to not being able to be active which is the last thing I needed.
What can I expect to hear from the Dr.? What are the chances he just chalks it up to getting old?(I'm 34). I'm not expecting to get a whole lot out of the visit other then some sort of prescription. I made this appt to appease my wife and she is right, she said to go because of the effects my knees are having on my life in general, and something needs to be done. I've only been to the Dr three times in the last 15 or so years so I not too sure what to expect.

Sounds like there really isn't anything he is going to do for you. Unless there is some ligament/cartilage damage that can be repaired by surgery you are pretty much going to need to live with it. He may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon, and see what they have to say so get ready to wait for a while for that appointment and any tests the surgeon orders. Likely down the road you will need a joint replacement, but you're probably too young to qualify for that now.
Looks like a scope is in my future. Hopefully won't have to wait too long.

So after approx 1 1/2 years of minor- medium pain ...
I had 20 years of gradually increasing pain and decreasing mobility. I went from running half marathons to eventually not being able to play with my kids on the floor because it hurt too much to get back up.
Got my knees scoped for torn meniscus and I can run without pain for the first time in 10+ years, don't have to ice my knees after running, can play with the kids. I feel stupid for not having it done sooner.
Could potentially be patellofemoral pain syndrome giving you the pain just proximal to the knee cap. If you have someone to help, get them to compress your knee cap (so push down on the knee cap) while you are lying flat on your back. Once there is pressure on the knee cap, contract the quads so that you are drawing the knee cap superiorly. Everyone will eventually have pain with this, but if you have pain with just light pressure it's typically a pretty solid sign that you have PFPS.
As for the potential MCL sprain, you can test this by lying on your back, and having someone block the lateral side of your knee, place one hand on the inside portion around the MCL and the other hand at the ankle. Your helper then pulls the ankle laterally to stress the knee medially. Compare the injured and uninjured side, if the injured side has pain and seems to gap easier/more then it's likely you've banged up your MCL.
At the same time, it sounds more like a meniscal injury to me. If you lie on your stomach bend your knees (so that there is a 90 degree angle between your calves and your thighs). Have a helper stabilize the thigh (so just push down on it) with one hand, and with the other push down on the ankle (so that the knee is compressed), next laterally rotate the thigh (so that the ankle is now pointing in the direction of your other hip) while maintaining the downward pressure. Now have them rotate in small circles. If there is pain then there is likely a medial mensicus injury.
Hope this makes sense and that it helps.
EDIT: Dangit, should have read all the responses first.
